Men's Squash Pushes No. 2 St. Lawrence Before Falling 7-2
December 08, 2014 | Men's Squash
"I am very proud of the guys today," head coach Sean Wilkinson said. "We made St. Lawrence earn everything they got, and we pushed them hard today. If we continue to work hard and develop, we're going to be a very tough team to beat when our Ivy League season begins next month."
Playing without two starters due to injury/illness, Princeton found itself trailing 2-1 after the first shift. The Tigers' lone win came from freshman Abhimanyu Shah, who improved to 4-1 on his rookie season with a 3-0 win over Hussien Elrayes at the No. 6 spot. Playing in his first varsity match, freshman Kevin Bradicich battled in the opener to an 11-9 loss, but he fell 3-0 at the No. 9 spot, as did senior David Hoffman at No. 3.
Senior All-America Tyler Osborne continued to show an elite level of play at the No. 2 spot, as he rallied from an 11-9 loss in the opener to defeat Edgar Zayas 1-9, 11-7, 11-7 in the final three games. Junior Michael LeBlanc nearly gave Princeton a third win, but following an 11-9 win to force a fifth game, he fell 12-10 at the No. 5 spot. Freshman Komron Shayegan continued to show his toughness, losing tight games of 12-10 and 11-9 at the No. 8 spot.
St. Lawrence needed only one match in the final shift to clinch the team win, and it had the 2013 individual national champion Amr Khalifa waiting to go. Khalifa defeated Samuel Kang in three games to assure St. Lawrence the win.
Senior Taylor Tutrone fell in three games at No. 4, while Ben Leizman — the lone winner from Saturday's Rochester match — went four games before falling at No. 7.
Princeton will now be off through the holidays, but it will return for a showdown against reigning Ivy League/national champion Harvard Jan. 10 at noon.
