Men's Squash Falls 7-2 In Ivy Opener, Host Dartmouth In Key Sunday Showdown
January 10, 2015 | Men's Squash
Princeton fell to 2-4 on the season, 0-1 in the Ivy League, and it is the Tigers' third loss of the season to a Top-5 program. The Tigers will get back on the court Sunday afternoon for a crucial showdown against No. 8 Dartmouth.
The Tigers were hoping for a quick start in their upset bid, but Harvard gave up only a single game in the first shift. Princeton freshman Jarryd Osborne — Tyler's younger brother — made his collegiate debut at No. 3 after missing the first two months with an illness, but Bradley Smith won two close games before taking control in the third.
Sophomore Ben Leizman tried to fight out of a 2-0 deficit at the No. 9 spot, but he ultimately fell in four games, while junior Michael LeBlanc fell in three at No. 6.
Tyler Osborne has made a career of huge wins at Jadwin, including one in Princeton's 5-4 upset of Harvard during the 2013 Ivy League championship season, and he knocked off Dylan Murray 11-3, 11-5, 12-10 at No. 2 to put the first point on the board for the home team.
Unfortunately, Harvard was in control of both matches at No. 5 and No. 8 to clinch the team victory.
Kang, who is looking to cap his brilliant career with a strong senior season, won his Ivy League opener 11-13, 11-6, 11-4, 11-5 over Madhay Dhingra. The Tigers actually put forth a very strong final shift. Senior tri-captain David Hoffman pushed Bryan Koh to extra points in each of the first two games before falling 3-0, and junior Sam Ezratty took Matt Roberts five games and held a match ball before ultimately dropping a 3-2 match.
Princeton will take on Dartmouth Sunday at noon in a match that will be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network. The Big Green, which fell 7-2 at No. 10 Penn Saturday, figure to be one of the top obstacles for Princeton in its race to return to the 'A' flight of the team national championships. The next two matches for Princeton, including a Jan. 28 home date against Penn, will go a long way in determining which teams will compete for the national title.
