Cody Kessel Drives Volleyball Past NJIT 3-0
April 05, 2014 | Men's Volleyball
Junior Cody Kessel was a first-team All-EIVA honoree last season, and he is making a strong case for a return to that squad in 2014. Kessel was brilliant Friday night in a road sweep at NJIT, recording 15 kills and a .619 attack percentage in leading the Tigers
The 25-18, 25-16, 25-18 win moves Princeton to 9-3 in EIVA play, which is currently good enough for second place in the EIVA following Penn State's 3-0 road sweep at Harvard. The Crimson will play a Saturday afternoon home match against Saint Francis, and a win would give Harvard the tiebreak edge over Princeton for the second spot with two matches remaining for both.
Kessel led Princeton with 17.5 points (15 kills, three assisted blocks, one service ace), while fellow All-EIVA first-team selection Pat Schwagler added 13 points (seven kills, five aces, two assisted blocks) in the victory. Princeton hit .452 as a team, which included a perfect four-kills-on-four-swings performance from junior middle Will Siroky. He added three aces and four blocks, while senior tri-captain Jeff Stapleton had four kills, two aces and one block.
Senior tri-captain Davis Waddell had 31 assists for Princeton, while sophomore Michael Bagnell had five digs.
Princeton will conclude EIVA play over the next two Friday nights, beginning April 11 with a road match at George Mason. The Tigers will host the Pioneers April 18 at 7 pm.
