The Princeton women's volleyball team left the Temple Invitational knowing it has enough offensive options to produce a strong season. Of course, it was one point away from also leaving with a major momentum-producing victory.The Tigers trailed undefeated Temple 13-10 in the decisive fifth set before rolling off four straight points to earn a match ball. Sophomore Cara Mattaliano nearly pulled off an athletic dig on a swing by Tyler Davis, but she couldn't get the ball to a teammate, and Temple won that point — and the next two — to close its tournament with a 3-2 victory.
Princeton finished the weekend with a 1-2 record, though it showed plenty in the 19-25, 25-23, 25-16, 24-26, 16-14 loss to the Owls. Junior Kendall Peterkin followed a brilliant effort against Holy Cross with a 24-kill, 22-dig effort against the Owls; it was the first 20-20 match of Peterkin's career. She went on to be named to the Temple Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Sophomore Cara Mattaliano, a first-team All-Ivy honoree last year, added 15 kills and 18 digs, while the middle duo of Nicole Kincade and Brittany Ptak combined for 22 kills with only one error. As an offense, led by Lauren Miller's 59 assists, the Tigers hit .241 overall.
Unfortunately, while Princeton was able to record 90 digs and 10 blocks as a team, it wasn't able to do quite enough defensively to overcome the undefeated Owls. Temple hit .251 for the match, including .276 in the final set, to claim the win.
The Tigers will return to the court next weekend when they head to Newark, Del., for the Delaware Invitational. Competition will open Friday morning with an 11 am showdown against George Mason.
