Women's Volleyball Continues Early-Season Push At Delaware Invitational
September 11, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
After competing against each other throughout preseason, the Princeton women's volleyball team got the chance to test itself against other teams last weekend. There were reasons for optimism, but the Tigers will be looking for more victories this weekend when they head to Newark, Del., for the 38th Annual University of Delaware Invitational.

BACK TO WORK
Following a 1-2 performance at the Temple Invitational, Princeton will take on George Mason (Friday, 11 am), Delaware (Friday, 7 pm) and Manhattan (Saturday, 10 am) this weekend in the 38th Annual University of Delaware Invitational. This is Princeton's first trip to the Delaware Invitational since the 2009 season, when the Tigers went 0-3 against Delaware, Rutgers and Army.
20-20 VISION
Junior Kendall Peterkin, who has ranked among the Ivy League Top 3 in both kills and points both seasons of her career, got her 2014 season off to a blistering start. She averaged nearly 4.5 kills, the best in the league, last weekend, and she posted her first career 20-20 match (24 kills, 22 digs) in the 3-2 loss to Temple. Peterkin was selected to the Temple Invitational all-tournament team, and she was named the Ivy League Player of the Week.
POWER PLAY
Sophomore Cara Mattaliano was a first-team All-Ivy League honoree last season, and she showed that she remains one of the league's top hitters last weekend. Mattaliano averaged 3.54 kills, fourth-best in the league, last weekend at Temple.
FRESH FACES
Though there wasn't significant impact from the freshman class last weekend, head coach Sabrina King did get to see a couple new faces make an impact. Outside Pauli King had five kills and 12 digs in the win over Holy Cross, while defensive specialist Maddie Huber saw action in two matches and recorded a pair of digs in both.
ABOUT GEORGE MASON (Fri, 11 am)
The Patriots are 1-6 on the season, though they have faced a series of talented teams early, and are coming off a 15-13 fifth-set loss to Maryland last weekend. A balanced offensive attack, Mason has three players averaging more than 2.0 kills per set; that trio includes Jessie Greenslade, who had 12 last season in a 3-1 Princeton victory over the Patriots.
ABOUT DELAWARE (Fri, 7 pm)
The Blue Hens are 5-3, but they enter the weekend with back-to-back 3-0 wins over Ivy League teams. Delaware had a dominant midweek victory over Penn (25-22, 25-9, 25-18), when the Blue Hens limited Penn to a .097 hitting percentage. Autumn Jenkins averaged 3.1 kills and 3.6 points per set for the host school.
ABOUT MANHATTAN (Sat, 10 am)
The Jaspers enter the weekend with a 6-1 record, including four victories by 3-0 scores. They have a strong 1-2 punch with Malia McGuinness (3.4 kills/set) and Sydney Volovski (3.1 kills/set), and the team averages more than 16 digs per set.
THOUGHTS FROM COACH KING
"We worked a lot on building off the Temple weekend, and I'm excited to see how that work translates on the court against three good teams. We are still working out different groups as we try to figure out our best lineup for the Ivy season. The team has worked hard, though, and we're excited to get down to Delaware."
