HAMDEN, Conn. (1/6/15) - Princeton sophomore Molly Contini's goal in the third period made it a one-goal game, but the Tigers weren't able to find the equalizer before No. 5 Quinnipiac was able to find an empty-net goal to earn a 3-1 win on Tuesday night at the TD Bank Sports Center.
The Bobcats scored a goal in each the first and second periods before Contini scored at 13:32 of the third. A fresh line out, Quinnipiac (16-1-3, 9-1-2 ECAC) chased down a puck behind its own net but junior Jaimie McDonell prevented a long pass with a poke check in the Tigers' offensive end. Contini collected the puck, found McDonell who was in the slot and McDonell gave it right back to her teammate for the tally.
Princeton (8-9-1, 6-6 ECAC) pulled netminder Kimberly Newell in favor of the extra attacker with 1:18 to play. Nine seconds later Quinnipiac iced the puck, and with a face off about to take place in the defensive end, the Bobcats called a timeout. The Tigers couldn't get a shot on goal, and had two shots blocked, the final by Kristen Tamberg who brought the puck the other way. Morgan Fritz-Ward fed Shiann Darkangelo for the empty-net goal at 19:28.
Lindsey West put Quinnipiac on the board at 15:15 of the first period when she and Nicole Connery teammed up for a 2x1 goal. Emma Woods had helped from Connery on the second goal at 13:07 of the second period but it was a screen set by another teammate that was the difference marker as Newell's line of sight was blocked entirely.
Newell finished the game with 26 saves, while Chelsea Laden made 16 stops in net for Quinnipiac.
Each team was 0 for 1 on the power play.
Princeton hosts Yale & Brown this weekend, Jan. 9 & 10 at Hobey Baker Rink. Game times are at 3 p.m., both days with the men's team playing a nightcap as part of the double double header.
