PRINCETON, N.J. (1/9/14) - Four different goal scorers and a 31-save performance by Kimberly Newell led Princeton to a 4-1 win over Yale on Friday, Jan. 9 at Hobey Baker Rink.
Jaimie McDonell, Ali Pankowski, Cassidy Tucker and Molly Contini each scored a goal. Contini added an assist, while Brianne Mahoney and Hilary Lloyd had two helpers. Pankowski posted a +4 on-ice rating.
It took just 2:15 for the Tigers to get on the board. A shot by Pankowski from the point was deflected into the corner where Lloyd collected the puck and sent it to Contini behind the cage. Contini centered in the slot for McDonell and she whipped it over the right shoulder of Jaimie Leonoff.
Exactly seven minutes later it was 2-0 with Pankowski netting a goal of her own as she rifled a shot from the left point that found its way through traffic. She was fed by Brianne Mahoney from the opposite point while Fiona McKenna earned the secondary assist.
In just her second game back after missing 13 games because of an inury, Cassidy Tucker net her second goal of the season. Senior Brianna Leahy settled the puck with her skate in the neutral zone and went up the center before finding Mahoney at the left boards. Mahoney let a shot goal and bounced off of Leonoff to Tucker and she buried the rebound at 10:42 of the third period for the 3-0 lead.
Courtney Pensavalle prevented Newell from collecting a shutout with Yale's lone goal at 18:26 of the third. Janelle Ferrara got the puck at the checkered red and pushed it ahead to herself before finding her trailer in Pensavalle who had the one timer.
Yale called a timeout with 1:02 remaining and pulled netminder Leonoff for the extra attacker. But 47 seconds later Contini sealed the win with an empty-net goal with Lloyd and Molly Strabley earning assists.
Princeton was 0 for 3 on the power play and 0 for 0 on the penalty kill.
The Tigers will face Brown tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. The Bears lost 3-0 at No. 5 Quinnipiac today.
