PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshman Nicole Catalino has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week and Suburban Transit/GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week after helping the 19th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team to a 4-3 overtime win over Columbia.
With Princeton trailing the Lions 3-2 in the latter stages of last Friday's Ivy League contest, Catalino came to the rescue, netting a pair of goals to help the Tigers pull out a thrilling come-from-behind victory.
Coming up with the equalizer at 66:47, Catalino made a run toward the backpost on a Princeton penalty corner. Tracking down an initial deflection on a Teresa Benvenuti shot from the top of the circle, Catalino got a stick on the carom while going to the ground to give the Tigers new life.
Completing Princeton's comeback, Catalino came up with the game winner minutes into the first overtime session. Once again carving out space at the far post, Catalino tapped in a Cat Caro feed at 71:38.
In the midst of a stellar rookie season, Catalino has six goals in her first 10 appearances. Catalino's Ivy honor is the sixth for Princeton this season. Anya Gersoff was named the conference's Co-Player of the Week on Sept. 8, while Maddie Copeland garnered POTW accolades on Sept. 22 and Oct. 6. In addition to Catalino, Sophia Tornetta has twice been named the league's Rookie of the Week (Sept. 8, Sept. 29).
