BOX SCORE
ERIE, Pa. (10/24/15) - The Princeton women's hockey team earned a series sweep of Mercyhurst, following a 2-1 win this afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Tigers won 3-2 yesterday to begin the 2015-16 season 2-0.
Freshman Karlie Lund scored her first college goal just 4:27 into the game. During the series Princeton did a great job of preventing Mercyhurst an easy breakout and for the third time it led to a goal. Lund intercepted a pass at the checkered red and took the puck in herself, shooting between the legs of her defender and goalie Sarah McDonnell.
Junior Morgan Sly added her second goal of the series to help expand the lead to 2-0 at 2:43 of the second period. She put away a Cristin Shanahan rebound with Molly Contini receiving the secondary assist.
A couple of Prineton penalties gave Mercyhurst some momentum and the offense started to come together. A goal quickly folllowed, at 12:21 of the second. A shot by Paige Horton caromed back out to the point and Sarah Robello found a cycling Molly Blasen in the high slot.
The Tigers were able to withstand a 6x4 in the game's final 1:24.
Senior Kimberly Newell made 27 saves in the win. McDonnell stopped 14 for the Lakers as Mercyhurst outshot Princeton 28-16.
Princeton starts the ECAC and Ivy League season next weekend when it travels to Yale and Brown.
