BOX SCORE
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (10/30/15) – Junior Fiona McKenna scored the game-winning goal with 3:37 remaining to lift Princeton women's hockey to a 4-3 win over Yale in the ECAC and Ivy League opener.
McKenna was able to knock in a Hilary Lloyd rebound to help the Tigers improve to 3-0 on the season.
Freshman defenders Stephanie Sucharda and Kimiko Marinacci each recorded their first career goals as Tigers.
Sucharda lit the lamp first at 8:12 of the first period. Sophomore Kiersten Falck had a shot blocked and the puck took a bounce to Sucharda and she fired from the top of the left circle for the glove side goal.
Yale answered with a short-handed tally by Hanna Åström at 17:35. Åström and Phoebe Staenz had a give-and-go into the Princeton zone and the last minute pass back to Åström caught netminder Kimberly Newell by surprise at the left post.
Marinacci's goal, a rifle from the right point, regained the lead for Princeton but it would be short lived as Yale's Janelle Ferrara score less than a minute later. After 40 minutes of play, the score was tied 2-2.
A power-play goal by Krista Yip-Chuck gave Yale it's first and last lead of the game. The goal game 1:48 into the third period.
Junior Kelsey Koelzer knotted the game at 3-3 at 4:17. Falck broke up a pass in the Princeton zone and fed Koelzer the puck. She skated down the center of the ice, weaved her way through two defenders and snuck the puck underneath Hanna Mandl. The goal was reviewed, as Koelzer did slide into Mandl, but only after being tripped by one of the defenders.
Bulldogs pulled Mandl for an extra skater in the final minute but were unable to get the equalizer.
Newell finished with 23 saves, while Mandl had 27.
Princeton will take on Brown, tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
