With two home games under its belt, the Princeton men's lacrosse team hits the road this weekend for the first time in 2015.
First, but hardly last.
When the dust settled - or more appropriately snow settled - on its 14-12 win over Hofstra last Saturday, Princeton had completed 40% of its home schedule. What's left in the 2015 regular season are 11 games, of which eight will be played on the road.
The Tigers are not home again until March 21 against Yale.
Between now and then are four straight road games, including three straight against teams who played in the 2014 NCAA tournament and who are currently ranked 12th, 10th and 11th by the media.
Princeton is at Johns Hopkins Saturday, and that will be followed by a trip the following week to Maryland , and another one week later to Penn. There will then be a midweek game at Rutgers March 17, which means Princeton will be playing half of the Big 10 and the defending Ivy League tournament champion all on the road in its next four.

Princeton opened its 2005 season - 10 years ago - on March 5 against Johns Hopkins.
The 2015 Princeton-Hopkins game comes on Feb. 28, and the teams have already played six games between them.
* * *
Princeton defeated Hofstra 14-12 last Saturday in a game that started with the field already covered by snow and ended with about three or four inches on Sherrerd Field.
Game time temperature for Princeton's opener against Manhattan was 28 degrees, and it was 25 degrees at game time against Hofstra. The gametime temperature Saturday in Baltimore is supposed to be 22 degrees.

Princeton and Johns Hopkins have met 84 times, and Hopkins has won exactly
two-thirds of the games, with a 56-28 lead in the series. Johns Hopkins won 24 straight from
1967-90, a run that ended in the 1990 NCAA tournament. The play-by-play man on the ESPN broadcast for this year's game is Quint Kessenich, who was Johns Hopkins' goalie in 1990.
Chris Bates is 3-2 against Hopkins since becoming Princeton's head coach.
The road team has won the last four years in the series. Prior to that, Princeton and Johns Hopkins played four straight years at M&T Bank Stadium, and going back a little further, the road team won in 2005 and 2006, meaning the home team hasn't won a game in this series since 2004. Added together, that's six straight wins by the visiting team, as well as four neutral site games that the teams split.

Princeton played the game against Hofstra minus three of its most important players due to injury - midfielder Jake Froccaro, longstick midfielder Will Reynolds and defenseman Mark Strabo. Froccaro and Reynolds were both preseason third-team All-Americas, and Strabo, a junior, had started all 29 games of his career prior to the game against Hofstra.
Their status for this game is uncertain.
Gavin McBride started on the first midfield, along with Kip Orban and Zach Currier. Aran Roberts, a freshman, started on defense, and Sam Gravitte moved up to be the top longstick midfielder, backed up by Brian Pickup.
* * *
Mark Strabo, Bear Goldstein and Will Reynolds had a combined 38 starts on defense last year in 13 games. Against Hofstra Princeton started Goldstein - the only current player on the team to have started every game of his career - with sophomore Alistair Berven (second career start) and freshman Aran Roberts (first career start).
* * *
Eric Sanschagrin ranks sixth in Division I in save percentage at .650; he had a career save percentage of .515 prior to this season.
Sanschagrin had a career high 16 saves in the snow game against Hofstra.
Sanschagrin has started 12 games in his career and played 745 career minutes, but he has never played one career second to date against Johns Hopkins.
* * *
Tom Schreiber had 11 goals and three assists for 14 points in four games against Johns Hopkins. Ryan Ambler has the most career points against Johns Hopkins of any current player with six (two goals, four assists) in two games, including two goals and three assists in a 15-9 loss last year on Sherrerd Field.
In addition to Ambler, the only current players to have points against Hofstra are Jake Froccaro (3G, 2A), Mike MacDonald (3G, 1A), Kip Orban (1G, 1A) and Will Himler (1A).
* * *
Hopkins defeated Princeton 15-9 a year ago in a game that was tied 4-4 at the end of the first quarter, before the Blue Jays scored eight of the next nine goals. Ryan Brown had five goals and three assists for Hopkins, who scored 15 goals on 35 shots.
* * *
Princeton is 23-56 against Johns Hopkins in the regular season and 3-0 against Johns Hopkins in the NCAA tournament.
* * *
Princeton's current team has a total of 433 career points.
Four players - Mike MacDonald, Jake Froccaro, Kip Orban and Ryan Ambler - have 369 of those points between them. That would be 85%.
Every other player on the team combined has 64 points.
MacDonald, Froccaro, Ambler and Orban have 62% of Princeton's points through two games this year (26 of 47), even though Froccaro did not play against Hofstra.
* * *
Mike MacDonald has been the Ivy League Player of the Week each of the first two weeks of the season, winning outright the first week and sharing the honor with Harvard's Deke Burns this past week. MacDonald tied his career high of nine points with five goals and four assists against Hofstra; his other nine-point game was a seven-goal, two-assist performance in a 14-13 overtime win over Cornell in the 2013 Ivy tournament semifinals.
MacDonald had one assist in the first half against Hofstra and then had four goals and three assists in third quarter and one more goal in the fourth. He now leads Princeton in goals (seven), assists (seven) and points (14). In fact, he and Burns lead Division I in points per game with 7.0 per game.
A sixth-ground pick of the Rochester Rattlers in the Major League Lacrosse draft, MacDonald had surgery on both of his hips in the off-season, and his six-month recovery caused him to miss the entire fall. Slowed by the hip injuries, MacDonald saw his goal total drop from 43 as a sophomore to 19 as a junior, though he did have a team-best 24 assists, more assists than even Tom Schreiber had (though Schreiber led the team in scoring for the fourth straight year).
MacDonald has 91 goals and 54 assists for his career, and he needs nine goals to join Schreiber and Wick Sollers as the only Princeton players ever with at least 100 career goals and 50 career assists. He's also on pace at least for 45 goals and 45 assists; only Dave Tickner has ever had a 30-goal, 30-assist season at Princeton, though Schreiber came close twice, with one season of 32 goals and 28 assists and another of 28 goals and 32 assists. Tickner, a 1977 grad who only played three seasons due to freshman ineligibility and who moved to midfield from attack as a senior, fell six goals short of the 100-50 club.
* * *
Kip Orban has the longest current streak in Division I for consecutive games with at least one goal, with 28 straight. His streak is tied for the fourth-longest in program history - and the longest by a midfielder - behind attackmen Chris Massey (46), B.J. Prager (31) and Jason Doneger (30) and even with Scott Conklin.
Orban had three goals against Hofstra, tying his career high. It was his sixth career three-goal game.
Orban and Mike MacDonald have at least one point in 30 straight games, tied for the 12th-longest current streak in Division I.
* * *
Zach Currier had three point in his first 10 career games last year. Then he added seven more in the last three.
Currier, playing in the first midfield, has seven more points in the first two games of the year, leaving him second on the team in scoring, behind Mike MacDonald. He had his second career three-goal game in the game against Hofstra, and he two assists for a career-high five points. For the year he has five goals on seven shots (.714, third in Division I).
He also made probably the biggest play of the game, with Princeton ahead by two in the fourth quarter but down two men, including one for two minutes, unreleasable. After a Hofstra turnover, Currier maintained possession for Princeton with a tough catch near the sideline and then almost single-handedly ran out the penalty time.
* * *
Freshman Sam Bonafede leads Princeton with 11 ground balls; no other player has more than five. Bonafede has won 20 of 34 face-offs, a percentage of .588.
As a team last year, Princeton won 46% of its face-offs for the year.
* * *
Neither Gavin McBride nor Bear Altemus had a point last year as freshmen.
McBride had two goals against Manhattan and two more against Hofstra. Altemus had one goal in each game, including the first goal of the season, in the game against Manhattan.
* * *
Princeton had two players selected in the Major League Lacrosse draft. Kip Orban was selected in the third round by Charlotte, while Mike MacDonald went in the sixth round to Rochester.
* * *
Justin Murphy has been Princeton's top face-off man the last two years, but his career ended due to multiple concussions. He is now working with the team as an undergraduate assistant coach.
Murphy won 106 of 192 face-offs last year (55.2%), while every other face-off man Princeton used went 54 for 156 (34.6%). Princeton will use Jake Froccaro, Sam Bonafede and Jack O'Brien as its primary face-off men this year.
