Welcome to the start of the two-weekend stretch where the 2014 season got away from Princeton in oh-so-frustrating fashion.
A year ago Princeton put up 15 goals against Yale - and lost 16-15. A week later, Princeton battled back from a big hole against Brown - and lost 11-10.
With those two one-goal losses, Princeton was forced to play catch-up the rest of the Ivy League season.
Now it's 51 weeks later. Princeton is 5-1 and scoring a ton of goals, except for one exception, in its only loss at Maryland, the possessor of the top defense in
Division I. Much more importantly for Princeton has been the team's performance in close games, something that history suggests this game will be.
Will Princeton be able to reverse what happened a year ago and begin to solidify itself in the race for the precious Ivy League tournament spots? The next two weekends will be huge.
It starts with the 99th meeting between Princeton and Yale.
* * *
Princeton and Yale meet for the 99th time, with Princeton ahead in the series 72-24 with two ties. Princeton comes in after having defeated Rutgers 12-11 Tuesday night in the 93rd meeting in that series.
Princeton has played Yale and Rutgers more than any other teams.
* * *
Princeton was 2-7 in one-goal games the last two seasons.
So far this season, Princeton is 2-0 in one-goal games, with wins over Johns Hopkins and Rutgers. It also has a two-goal win over Hofstra.
Yale is also 2-0 in one-goal games, both of which went to OT (St. John's, Fairfield).
This is Year 6 as head coach at Princeton for Chris Bates. Incredibly, all five regular-season games against Yale during that time have been one-goal games, including two that have gone to overtime.
The games have been as high-scoring as 16-15 and as low-scoring as 7-6.
* * *
Princeton lost 16-15 to Yale a year ago despite getting 10 goals from Jake Froccaro, who tied the school record originally set in 1951 by William Griffith.
* * *
Princeton is 1-0 in the Ivy League after its 17-11 win over Penn last weekend. Cornell and Brown are also 1-0 in the league.
Yale is 0-1, having lost 14-7 to Cornell last Saturday for its first loss of the year.The last two times Yale started off with league losses to Cornell and Princeton, it came back to go 4-2 and then win the Ivy tournament.
* * *
Mike MacDonald, Ryan Ambler and Kip Orban have combined for 24 goals and 16 assists in the last two games, all after being shut out by Maryland three games ago.
In fact, it's been an all-out assault on career-highs – and the Princeton record book – by the trio.
All three have either tied or set career highs in goals, assists and points in the last two games:
MacDonald: tied career high with seven goals against Rutgers, career-high six assists against Penn, tied career high nine points (third time) against Penn
Ambler: tied career high with five goals against Penn, tied career high with five assists against Rutgers, career-high eight points against Penn
Orban: career-high seven goals against Penn, tied career high with two assists against Penn, career-high nine points against Penn.
* * *
Then there's the Princeton record book.
MacDonald became the first player in program history to have at least six assists in one game and then at least seven goals in the next.
MacDonald, Ambler and Orban became the first trio in program history to all have at least eight points in a game, and Orban and MacDonald became the first two players to have at least nine points in the same game.
The three also combined for 15 goals and 26 points against Penn, numbers that are not matched anywhere in program history as far back as game-by-game records are kept.
* * *
Mike MacDonald reached the 100-goal mark with the third of his seven goals against Rutgers Tuesday. He now has 104, ninth-best in program history, leaving him one away from Jason Doneger for eighth and two away from Tom Schreiber for seventh.
MacDonald has 165 career points (104G, 61A), ninth-best in program history. He is nine away from Wick Sollers for eighth.
In addition, MacDonald, Schreiber and Sollers are the only three players in program history to have at least 100 goals and at least 60 assists.
* * *
Kip Orban has 97 career points (74G, 23A).
Orban, the Ivy Player of the Week last week after his seven-goal, seven-shot, nine-point day against Penn, needs three more points to become the 29th player in program history to reach 100 points.
On the other hand, if Ryan Ambler gets five points before Orban gets three, then Ambler (47G, 48A) would be the 29th to get to 100 points.
* * *
In the last 13 meetings between the teams, Yale has won 190 of 282 face-offs, which comes to .674. Yale won 25 of 35 face-offs against Princeton a year ago, which is .714.
Yale's Dylan Levings, in six career games against Princeton, was 79 for 123 (.642). He also took all 35 face-offs in the game a year ago.
The good news for Princeton is that Levings finally, finally graduated.
The bad news is that Princeton's freshman face-off man, Sam Bonafede, missed the game Tuesday due to injury. Bonafede has won 55 of 97 face-offs on the season, ranking him 20th in Division I at .567.
Without Bonafede, Princeton won 8 of 27 face-offs against Rutgers and Joe Nardella.
Yale's Jonathan Reese, whose father Jon is one of the great players in Ivy League history and Yale's all-time leading scorer, has won 53 of 94 face-offs (.564).
* * *
Princeton's Sam Bonafede was ranked as the 25 freshman in Division I by Inside Lacrosse this week. Yale's Ben Reeves (11G, 6A) was ranked eighth.
The only other Ivy League players on the list were Brown's Jake Miller (23rd) and Harvard's Joe Lang (17th).
* * *
Adam Hardej had his first career two-goal game in the win over Rutgers.
Gavin McBride did not score a goal in the game, but he did have an assist. He is the only player on the team with at least one point in every game this season.
* * *
Princeton ranks first in the Ivy League and third in Division I in team shooting percentage at .368.
Princeton is also first in the Ivy League (and seventh nationally) in man-up offense, at .567.
* * *
To this point, Princeton and Yale have one common opponent: Maryland.
Yale defeated Maryland 10-6 and are the only team to reach double figures against the Terps.
Princeton lost 11-4 to Maryland.
Princeton has scored at 12, 14, 14, 16 and 17 in its five wins and four in its one loss.
* * *
Princeton will be honoring the 1990 team at halftime of today's game. The 1990 Tigers were the first in program history to play in the NCAA tournament, where the 1990 Tigers ended a 24-game program losing streak to Johns Hopkins in the opening round before losing to Yale in the quarterfinals.
* * *
Sam Gravitte, Princeton's longstick midfielder, had the first goal of his career and the first by a Princeton longstick this year in the loss to Maryland. He also had two caused turnovers and three ground balls. He currently leads Princeton in caused turnovers.
In addition to lacrosse last weekend, Gravitte also performed at McCarter Theater in Princeton in the musical “Spring Awakening.” Gravitte was in the show Friday night and then drove to Maryland separately from the team, returning immediately after the game in time for the Saturday night show.
The last two performances of the show were the Thursday and Friday before the Penn game.
* * *
When Princeton defeated Johns Hopkins, it marked the third straight year that Princeton had played a 16-15 game.
In the entire history of Princeton lacrosse prior to that, going back to 1882, Princeton had played one 16-15 game, against Rutgers in 1979.
* * *
Princeton returns home Saturday to take on Yale and then is home again the following Sunday against Brown.
A year ago, Princeton lost 16-15 at Yale and 11-10 at Brown.
* * *
Will Reynolds, a preseason third-team All-America defenseman, will miss the rest of the season due to a concussion he suffered in the season opener against Manhattan.
Mark Strabo had started every game of his career before getting injured after the Manhattan game. He has not played since.
Jake Froccaro missed the Hofstra and Hopkins games due to injury, returned to play against Maryland (scoring a goal) and then missed the Penn game due to injury.
* * *
Princeton had two players selected in the Major League Lacrosse draft. Kip Orban was selected in the third round by Charlotte, while Mike MacDonald went in the sixth round to Rochester.
Princeton also has four players on the Tewaaraton Trophy watch list - MacDonald and Jake Froccaro were originally named, and Kip Orban and Zach Currier were added.
