Mike MacDonald and Kip Orban have been scoring goals at a rapid rate this season.
They are the last two USILA Offensive Players of the Week. Each has had a seven-goal game within the last two weeks. They are moving up into the elite company of all-time Princeton goal scorers.
Why bring all this up?
MacDonald and Orban are tied for the Princeton lead with 22 goals each. Want a little perspective? The two of them combined have three more goals than Brown's Dylan Molloy has all by himself. For those who don't feel like doing the math, Molloy has 41 goals, making him the first player in Division I to reach 40 goals this season.
Molloy did it in eight games - that's more than five goals per game, by the way. In the great history of Princeton lacrosse, only eight players have ever reached 41 goals for a full season. MacDonald, who had 43 two years ago, is one of them.

Welcome to what could be one of the great shootouts in college lacrosse this season. Or at least that's how it looks before the face-off.
On one side there's Brown, who was the top scoring team in Division I with 16.88 goals per game until Albany put up 21 Wednesday night to edge into the lead. Still, the Bears have put up at least 20 goals twice and at least 17 five times in eight games
In the other corner we have the Princeton Tigers, who score only 12.57 goals per game. The Tigers are an effecient group, shooting an extraordinary .370 as a team, fourth-best in Division I and best in the Ivy League.
And Princeton's offensive numbers are skewed a bit by a four-goal game against defensive behemoth Maryland. Take away that game, and Princeton has scored 14 per game.
In fact, Princeton's goal totals in its six wins have been 11, 12, 14, 14, 16 and 17. For that matter, the losing team in the last five Princeton wins has scored 10, 11, 11, 12 and 15.
So yes, this one could be high-scoring.

* * *
Of course, all of that probably means the final will be 8-6, right?
Princeton-Brown history is littered with low scoring games. Only three times in the last 32 years have both teams reached double figures in the Princeton-Brown game - in 1991, 2002 and last year, when the Bears ran out to a big lead and held off the Tigers 11-10 in the rain in Providence.
Prior to last year's game, the average score of the previous 10 Princeton-Brown games was 9.5-5.2.
* * *
Brown defeated Marist 16-15 in overtime Tuesday night. The Bears led 11-2 in the third quarter before needing OT.
The game-winner came from Kylor Bellistri. Dylan Molloy had eight goals in the game.
Both Princeton and Brown now have won 16-15 overtime games this season after having huge leads disappear. Princeton defeated Johns Hopkins on Gavin McBride's OT goal after leading 7-0.
* * *
Should it come up, the most goals ever scored in a game at Class of 1952 Stadium is 31, back when Princeton defeated Hofstra 17-14 in 2010 in the first game for Chris Bates as Tiger head coach.
* * *
Princeton leads the all-time series with Brown 31-22. Princeton and Brown did not play men's lacrosse until the 1964 season.
By contrast, Princeton first played Yale and Harvard in the 1880s and Cornell and Penn in the 1920s. The first Princeton-Dartmouth game was in 1953.
Princeton and Brown played twice in 2012, in the regular season and in the Ivy League semifinals, and twice in 1994, in the regular season and in the NCAA semifinals.
* * *
Princeton has never scored more than 15 goals in a game against Brown.
The highest single-game total for Brown against Princeton is 16.
* * *
Brown's Will Gural ranks ninth in Division I in face-off winning percentage at .633 (69 for 199).
In its last two games (Rutgers and Yale), Princeton has won 15 of 51 face-offs. As a result, the Tigers were outshot by a combined 70-58 in those two games, with 29 shots in each game.
Princeton did score 23 goals on those 58 shots (40%).
* * *
Mike MacDonald had nine goals and four assists in Princeton's last two games, a 12-11 win over Rutgers and an 11-10 win over Yale.
MacDonald earned Ivy League Co-Player of the Week honors and USILA Offensive Player of the Week honors.
In his last three games, MacDonald has 12 goals and 10 assists, after getting shut out the game before that by Maryland.
MacDonald has 106 career goals, tied with Tom Schreiber for seventh all-time at Princeton, eight away from Wick Sollers for sixth. MacDonald also has 171 career points (106G, 65A), three away from Sollers for eighth.
* * *
Gavin McBride is the only Princeton player to have at least one point in every game this year. McBride, a sophomore, did not have a point last year. He has 10 goals and seven assists through seven games this season.
* * *
Princeton scored four goals in the first 53:38 of last year's game against Brown in Providence. The Tigers then scored five more goals in the next 3:54. In the process, Princeton turned a 10-5 deficit into an 11-10 game with 3:28 left but could never get the goal to tie the game.
Princeton went 2-4 in the Ivy League last year, with three one-goal losses and a two-goal loss. Princeton was 2-7 in one-goal games the last two years combined.
This year? Princeton is now 3-0 in one-goal games, with a two-goal win as well.
* * *

Princeton and Cornell entered the weekend at 2-0 in the Ivy League. Brown and Dartmouth were both 1-0.
Harvard, Penn and Yale are all 0-2.
All three Ivy League games last weekend were decided by one goal, with two in overtime.
Since the first Ivy League tournament in 2010, no team has had three league wins and failed to make the field of four.
The Ivy games yesterday were Yale at Penn and Dartmouth at Cornell.
* * *
Kip Orban leads all Division I midfielders in goals per game and is ninth overall in Division I.
Orban went over the 100-point mark for his career in the win over Yale last weekend.
After his four-goal game against Yale, Orban now has 78 career goals, which ranks him 22nd all-time at Princeton. Orban also has 13 goals in his last three games.
Among pure middies all-time at Princeton, Orban trails only Tom Schreiber (106), Josh Sims (104), Lorne Smith (94) and Mark Kovler (84).
* * *
Brown's Jack Kelly leads the Ivy League in save percentage (.556) and is second in goals-against average (9.45). Kelly made 16 saves against Princeton a year ago in the game in Providence.
Brown's Larken Kemp leads the nation in caused turnovers per game with 2.86.
* * *
Sam Gravitte, Princeton's longstick midfielder, had the first goal of his career and the first by a Princeton longstick this year in the loss to Maryland. He also had two caused turnovers and three ground balls. He currently leads Princeton in caused turnovers.
In addition to lacrosse last weekend, Gravitte also performed at McCarter Theater in Princeton in the musical “Spring Awakening.” Gravitte was in the show Friday night and then drove to Maryland separately from the team, returning immediately after the game in time for the Saturday night show.
The last two performances of the show were the Thursday and Friday before the Penn game.
* * *
When Princeton defeated Johns Hopkins, it marked the third straight year that Princeton had played a 16-15 game.
In the entire history of Princeton lacrosse prior to that, going back to 1882, Princeton had played one 16-15 game, against Rutgers in 1979.
* * *
Will Reynolds, a preseason third-team All-America defenseman, will miss the rest of the season due to a concussion he suffered in the season opener against Manhattan. Jake Froccaro, also a preseason third-team All-America, played against Manhattan and Maryland but will also miss the rest of the season due to a concussion.
Mark Strabo had started every game of his career before getting injured after the Manhattan game. He has not played since.
* * *
Princeton had two players selected in the Major League Lacrosse draft. Kip Orban was selected in the third round by Charlotte, while Mike MacDonald went in the sixth round to Rochester.
Princeton also has four players on the Tewaaraton Trophy watch list - MacDonald and Jake Froccaro were originally named, and Kip Orban and Zach Currier were added.
