The Princeton men's volleyball team built up some positive energy heading into its three biggest matches of the season Tuesday night. Senior Cody Kessel recorded 16 kills and five service aces to power the Tigers to a 3-0 win over Division III power Kean University to open a three-match homestand at Dillon Gym.
The 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 victory sends Princeton into an EIVA finishing sprint with a 10-10 record, as well as a 5-4 mark in league play. The Tigers will host seventh-ranked Penn State Friday night, followed by matches with postseason contenders Saint Francis (Saturday, home) and next weekend at George Mason.
Head coach Sam Shweisky was able to use a number of players throughout the match, including junior Zach Shaw, who recorded eight kills and five digs. Freshman Kendall Ratter matched Kessel with five service aces, while Will Siroky connected for kills on all three of his swings.
Sophomore Chris Kennedy paced the offense, which hit above .300 in two of the three sets, with 28 assists, while middle Junior Oboh had a pair of blocks in the win.
Princeton will now prepare for its first home match against Penn State since the thrilling 3-2 victory over the Nittany Lions last season. Those two teams, which currently stand 1-2 in the EIVA standings, met in the 2014 EIVA championship match, which the Nittany Lions won.
