Welcome to history, in the form of the 100th meeting between Princeton and Yale.
Princeton and Yale first met on Oct. 14, 1882, and, well, this is the 100th meeting. If we're talking history between Princeton and Yale, though, then the way more recent kind is of much greater value right about now.
Princeton and Yale meet in the Ivy League tournament championship game, marking the third time in four years that these two have matched up for the league's automatic NCAA tournament bid.
The first two times? Back in 2012, it was Yale 15, Princeton 7 in the Ivy final. A year later, it was Yale 12, Princeton 8 in the Ivy final.
In both of those years, Princeton won the regular season matchup before losing to Yale in the final.
Going back to 2013, Princeton lost its regular season finale at Cornell and then came back to beat the Big Red in the Ivy semifinal before losing to Yale. This year, Princeton lost its regular season finale and then beat the Big Red in the Ivy semifinals.
For one more bit of historical context, Yale started both the 2012 and 2013 Ivy League seasons 0-2, with losses to Cornell and Princeton, before coming back to reach and then win the league tournament. Yale started this Ivy season 0-2, with losses to Cornell and Princeton.
That's the backdrop. The 100th meeting between two historic rivals, with a lot on the line. The winner knows it's in the NCAA tournament. Both teams will sweat on Stevenson Field during the game; the losing team will sweat it out during the NCAA selections at night.

This the sixth season as Princeton head coach for Chris Bates. In each of those six years, the regular-season game between Princeton and Yale has been decided by a single goal.

Eric Sanschagrin was the goalie for the first Princeton-Yale game. Tyler Blaisdell is now the Princeton starter, and he will make his sixth straight start in the Ivy final.
His best game was the 11-7 win over Cornell in the semifinals. In that game, Blaisdell made 14 saves and also had two caused turnovers.
Princeton is 3-2 in the five games that Blaisdell has started.
In the two losses, Blaisdell has a 15.02 goals-against average and a .412 save percentage.

* * *
In the last 14 meetings between the teams, Yale has won 207 of 306 face-offs, which comes to .676. Yale was 17 for 24 against Princeton in the first meeting (.7.08) and won 25 of 35 face-offs against Princeton a year ago, which was .714.
* * *

* * *

Mike MacDonald was named Co-Player of the Year, along with Brown's Dylan Molloy, and was also a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection, as was Kip Orban.

Here is an updated list of Mike MacDonald's and Kip Orban's accomplishments:
* MacDonald holds the school record for points in a season with 77 (47G, 30A)
* MacDonad's 47 goals rank third on Princeton's single-season list, two away from Wick Sollers (49 in 1976) and six away from Jesse Hubbard (53 in 1996)
* MacDonald has 131 career goals, third all-time at Princeton, behind Jesse Hubbard (163) and Chris Massey (146), and 15th in Ivy League history; he needs one to tie Dave Bohn of Harvard (1959-61) for 14th and five to tie Cornell's Sean Greehalgh (2002-05) for 13th
* MacDonald is the only player in school history to have at least 40 goals and 20 assists in a season; he and Dave Tickner are the only two players with at least 30 goals and 30 assists
* MacDonald and Tom Schreiber are the only two players in program history with at least 100 goals and 70 assists and are the only two players in program history in the top 10 in goals and assists

* Orban ranks third all-time among Princeton middies for goals in a career with 97, six away from Josh Sims and nine away from Tom Schreiber
* * *
With all of the MacDonad/Orban tearing up of the record book, it is actually Ryan Ambler who is second on the team in points this season with 48 (22G, 26A).
Ambler needs three goals to become the 13th player in program history with at least 60 career goals and 60 career assists.
* * *
Gavin McBride is the only Princeton player with at least one point in each game this season, and he had three goals against Cornell in the Ivy semifinal.
McBride has 22 goals and 12 assists this season after having no points as a freshman a year ago. Princeton has never before had a player go from no points as a freshman to double figures in goals or assists as a sophomore, let alone both.
* * *
Shortstick defensive midfielder Austin deButts currently leads Princeton in caused turnovers with 17.
Since caused turnovers became an official NCAA stat in 2010, no shortstick has led Princeton in the category.
* * *
Princeton has had a player score at least three goals in a game 27 times in 14 games, and five different players - Ryan Ambler, Mike MacDonald, Kip Orban, Gavin McBride and Zach Currier - have done it at least once.
* * *
Kip Orban and Mike MacDonald were both named mid-season second-team All-Americas by Inside Lacrosse.
Neither was a preseason All-America on first-team, second-team, third-team or honorable mention. Both are Major League Lacrosse draftees. Orban was selected in the third round by Charlotte, while Mike MacDonald went in the sixth round to Rochester.
* * *
Will Reynolds, a preseason third-team All-America defenseman, will miss the rest of the season due to an injury he suffered in the season opener against Manhattan. Jake Froccaro, also a preseason third-team All-America, played against Manhattan and Maryland but will also miss the rest of the season due to a concussion.

Cornell defeaetd Princeton 15-10 last Saturday in Ithaca. Depending on which team you root for, you have one of two ways of looking at it:
1) If you take away that pesky little 10-0 run by Cornell the other day, it was 10-5 Princeton.
2) If you take away the 5-0 first quarter by Princeton, it was 15-5 Cornell.
Princeton and Cornell meet again six days after the first get-together, this time in the Ivy League tournament semifinals at Brown. The host team - who shared the Ivy title with Princeton and Cornell; nothing that happens this weekend will change that - takes on Yale in the second semifinal. The winners will meet Sunday at noon for the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
The first game featured a dramatic swing from one quarter to the next. Princeton led 5-0 and outshot Cornell 14-4 by the end of the first quarter. Cornell then outscored Princeton 9-0 and outshot Princeton 25-4 - including 21-0 at one point - in the second quarter. All 14 goals in the first half were scored in the same goal at Schoellkopf Field.
The Tigers never got closer than two goals in the second half.
What does any of that mean in the rematch? Well, there is one historical precedent, one that Princeton fans wouldn't mind seeing again. The last time these two teams found themselves in this situation was two years ago, when Cornell hammered Princeton on the final day of the regular season 17-11. Then, six days later, Princeton won in the Ivy semifinals 14-13, as Mike MacDonald scored seven goals and then assisted on Kip Orban's game-winner in overtime.
* * *
This is the sixth Ivy League tournament, which means there have been 15 Ivy tournament games played to date.
The team that won the regular season game is 8-7 in Ivy tournament rematch games.
* * *
The Princeton-Cornell game will feature five first-team All-Ivy League selections, including four unanimous selections: Princeton's Kip Orban and Mike MacDonald (both unanimous) and Cornell's Connor Buczek (unanimous), Jordan Stevens (unanimous) and Matt Donovan.
* * *
Princeton had five players named All-Ivy League.
Mike MacDonald was named Co-Player of the Year, along with Brown's Dylan Molloy, and was also a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection, as was Kip Orban.
Zach Currier and Bear Goldstein were second-team All-Ivy picks, and Ryan Ambler was named honorable mention.
* * *
Princeton had 10 goals and five assists in the loss to Cornell last weekend. All of those points came from four players - Kip Orban (four goals), Mike MacDonald (three goals, two assists), Ryan Ambler (two goals, one assist), Gavin McBride (one goal, one assist).
Cornell had 15 goals and four assists. All of those points came from the six players on the starting attack and first midfield.
* * *
Cornell won 20 of 29 face-offs and had a 36-24 edge in ground balls in the game last weekend. Despite that possession edge, Princeton actually outshot Cornell 40-39, though it was 35-26 Cornell in the final three quarters.
* * *
Cornell has won 29 Ivy titles. Princeton has won 27. Brown is in third, with nine.
* * *
Only once in the first 72 meetings between Princeton and Cornell, only once were both teams in double figures in goals. Both teams have now been in double figures in each of the last four meetings.
* * *
Princeton is one of three teams in Division I that has two players who have more than 50% of the team's goals. Mike MacDonald has 43, and Kip Orban has 40, giving them 83 of the team's 159 (52.2%).
The other two tandems are NJIT's Joe Lomeli and Liam Derkasch and Stefan Diachenko and Eric DeJohn of St. John's.
* * *
Here is a list of Mike MacDonald's and Kip Orban's accomplishments:
* MacDonald, with 71 points, is the third Princeton player ever to reach 70 points in a season (43G, 28A); he needs one point to tie Jesse Hubbard for second (72 in 1996) and three to tie Jon Hess for first (74 in 1997)
* MacDonald has 127 career goals, third all-time at Princeton, behind Jesse Hubbard (163) and Chris Massey (146)
* MacDonald is the only player in school history to have at least 40 goals and 20 assists in a season; with two more assists he would join Dave Tickner as the only two players with at least 30 goals and 30 assists
* MacDonald and Tom Schreiber are the only two players in program history with at least 100 goals and 70 assists and are the only two players in program history in the top 10 in goals and assists
* MacDonald ranks fifth all-time in points at Princeton with 201, 10 away from Jesse Hubbard for fourth
* MacDonald went over the 200-point mark for his career in the last Cornell game, making him the 17th Ivy League player ever to reach 200 points
* MacDonald and Chris Massey are the only two Princeton players ever with two seasons of at least 43 goals
* Orban set the Princeton record for goals in a season by a midfielder with 40
* Orban is the only midfielder in Division I with at least 40 goals
* Orban ranks third all-time among Princeton middies for goals in a career with 96, seven away from Josh Sims and 10 away from Tom Schreiber
* * *
Mike MacDonald had three straight games with six points before last week's Cornell game - when he had five.
MacDonald has at least three goals in nine of 13 games this season.
* * *
Ryan Ambler has at least four points in eight of 13 games this season.
Ambler has 56 career goals and 60 career assists. He needs
* * *
Gavin McBride is the only Princeton player with at least one point in each game this season.
McBride has 19 goals and 12 assists this season after having no points as a freshman a year ago. Princeton has never before had a player go from no points as a freshman to double figures in goals or assists as a sophomore, let alone both.
* * *
Tyler Blaisdell has started the last four games in goal for the Tigers. He earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors after his 15-save performance against Harvard.
* * *
Zach Currier has a team-best 67 ground balls, which are actually 25 more than the next highest total. The last time a starting offensive midfielder led the team in ground balls was in 2004, when Drew Casino (also the top face-off man that year) did so.
His 67 ground balls are the most by a Princeton shortstick since Matt Bailer had 68 in 2000. Next up would be James Mitchell with 95 in 1997.
Currier can face-off, play offensive midfield, play defensive midfield and play the wings on face-offs. He preserved Princeton's 12-11 win over Harvard last week with a caused turnover after a lost face-off with 20 seconds remaining.
* * *
Shortstick defensive midfielder Austin deButts currently leads Princeton in caused turnovers with 17.
Since caused turnovers became an official NCAA stat in 2010, no shortstick has led Princeton in the category.
* * *
Princeton has had a player score at least three goals in a game 25 times in 13 games, and five different players - Ryan Ambler, Mike MacDonald, Kip Orban, Gavin McBride and Zach Currier - have done it at least once.
* * *
* * *
Mark Strabo had started every game of his career before getting injured after the Manhattan game. He has not played since and will miss the rest of the season.
