MIAMI (9/12/15) - Senior Thomas Sanner scored the lone goal, as FIU rallied for a 2-1 win over Princeton in men's soccer on Saturday, Sept. 12 at FIU Soccer Stadium.
Sanner scored in the 9th minute on a corner kick by senior Nico Hurtado, who made a homecoming tonight in South Florida. It was the first shot of the game, as Hurtado lofted in the game's first corner and Sanner deflected it past goalkeeper Arthur Clapot.
The Panthers scored twice in the second half, with goals coming within four minutes of each other to win their fourth straight game.
After Sanner's goal, the Tigers continued to press, taking eight shots in the first half to the Panthers' two.
Just two minutes after the goal,sSenior Greg Seifert sent a great ball down the left side to senior Brendan McSherry but the shot went into the side netting. Freshman Jeremy Colvin had a nice chance on a Sanner redirect on senior Josh Miller's restart from 60 yards out but Clapot made the save in the 25th minute. Seifert and junior Patrick Barba each saw headers go wide, while McSherry had three more chances to convert in the first half.
Like it did two days before in a 3-1 come-from-behind win over Penn, FIU had a better second half. Jamar Campion-Hinds was set up but he sent a slow-rolling ball wide in the 52nd. Luca Giovine took a header wide, before Steffen Bohm had to chances go beyond the goal.
Senior Ben Hummel replaced the junior Josh Haberman in goal in the 62nd minute after suffering some leg pain. Hummel was tested seven minutes later when he tipped up a Campion-Hinds shot from the right side and out of play. The Panthers continued to give the Princeton defense trouble, but sophomore Mark Romanowski made a great stop on a sprint by FIU down the right side in the 69th.
FIU broke through in the 75th minute as Giovine scored with help from Brad Fountain. A cross by Daniel Gonzalez from in front of his team bench went over the head of a leaping Romanowski, to Fountain in the box who then one-timed a pass to Giovine.
Fountain factored into the deciding goal three minutes later when he netted a cross from Campion-Hinds on a counter. Fountain was open on the right side and had no trouble with the pass and goal.
Princeton had chance to take the lead in the 76th minute when it received a free kick after Colvin drew a yellow card. Senior John Kendall replaced Colvin as he was injured on the foul and had a header go just wide on the restart.
Clapot continued to give Princeton trouble as it tried to find the equalizer, with Sanner testing him in the 79th minutes before he would grab a senior John Hilger corner out of the air. Another chance came when the Tigers had a 2x2 develop but sophomore Nicholas Badalamenti's skip shot to Sanner was a touch too far as Clapot got to it first.
Clapot finished the game with two saves as his team wins its fourth straight game and improves to 4-2.
Princeton outshot FIU 14-12 and won the corner kick battle 6-2.
The Tigers fall to 1-2 on the season and will return home to host Boston University in the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 19.
