The Quakers scored 10 of the final 12 points Friday night to rally past Princeton in the fourth set and open their Ivy League season with a 3-1 win over Princeton.
Princeton (5-5, 0-1 Ivy League) seemed in good position to force a decisive fifth set when it grabbed a 22-16 lead, but the Quakers won five of the next six to get back into it. Princeton led 24-21, but Penn continued to push and got a timely service ace and a block to help it to the victory.
Princeton was led by the duo of Kendall Peterkin and Cara Mattaliano, both of whom had 17 kills. Junior middle Brittany Ptak added 11 kills with only one error, while sophomore Kelly Matthews added seven kills. Senior libero Sarah Daschbach led the back line of the defense with 22 digs, while freshman middle Nnenna Ibe had four blocks to go along with her six kills.
After Penn took the opening set, Princeton found its footing midway through the second and rolled late in the set for a 25-19 victory. Penn got out to a big lead in the third, but Princeton battled back to even it at 22-22. The Quakers kept the Tigers from grabbing a lead, and they scored the final three to grab a 2-1 lead.
Princeton will head north next weekend to take on reigning Ivy co-champion Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend.
