PRINCETON, N.J. – Anya Gersoff and Sophia Tornetta of the 20th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team each earned weekly accolades following a stellar showing during the Tigers' opening weekend.
Playing all 154:51 minutes in net, Gersoff posted a .757 save percentage against No. 2 North Carolina and No. 6 Virginia en route to Ivy League Co-Player of the Week honors. With Princeton outshot 26-6 by UNC, Gersoff racked up a career high 14 saves. The following afternoon against UVA, Gersoff once again proved up to the task, matching her personal benchmark with 14 stops in 84:51 minutes.
Named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, Tornetta also laid claim to Coach USA/GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week honors. Making her collegiate debut against the Tar Heels, Tornetta netted one of two Tiger goals, finding the back of the UNC cage in the 62nd minute.
Against UVA, Tornetta inserted a penalty corner in the 50th minute that led to a Cat Caro goal that pulled Princeton even at 2-2. Just over 10 minutes later, Tornetta calmly converted a penalty stroke that gave the Tigers a 3-2 edge. During the overtime session, Tornetta continued to make an impact, recording a pair of defensive saves.
Princeton returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 12 against Bucknell.
