Sims, Sowers Earn Spots On U.S. U-19 Team For 2016 World Championships
January 27, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
Austin Sims and Michael Sowers will be U.S. national team teammates first and Princeton teammates after that.
Sims, a sophomore at Princeton, and Sowers, a high school senior who will be a member of the Princeton Class of 2020, were both chosen for the United States Under-19 team, U.S. Lacrosse announced. The U.S. team will compete at the World U-19 Championships in Coquitlam, British Columbia, this coming July 7-16.
"We're excited to have them represent the Princeton men's lacrosse program at the World Championships," said Princeton head coach Chris Bates. "It's wonderful for them. For Austin, it's the next step. He has a chance to do a lot of really good things for us on both the offensive and defensive ends, and this entire experience will help him evolve as a real leader."
Sims, from Fairfield, Conn., played mostly defensive shortstick midfield for Princeton as a freshman, though he will probably have more of a two-way role this coming season. A high school All-America at Fairfield Prep, Sims had two assists, 12 ground balls and three caused turnovers as freshman.
Sowers is a senior at Upper Dublin High School outside of Philadelphia who has been admitted as part of the Class of 2022 and accepted his offer of admission. Sowers, the MVP of the Under Armour Underclassman Games last summer, had had 79 goals and 208 assists in his last two high school seasons.
The U.S. team was chosen after a series of tryouts, beginning with a pool of 105 players that was cut to 50 and then 30 before the final 25 were announced.
