BOX SCORE
Senior Devin Stearns recorded nine kills, while sophomore Billy Andrew added seven kills and hit .500 in his first collegiate start, but the Princeton men's volleyball team dropped its season opener 3-0 to the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes Tuesday evening in Dillon Gym.
The Tigers, who will host Canadian power Laval on both Thursday and Friday night — both on the Ivy League Digital Network — pushed the Buckeyes through the early portions of all three sets, but the Buckeyes grabbed control midway through to claim wins of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-20.
Stearns, a four-year starter for the Tigers, had nine kills and three digs for the Tigers at the opposite position, the first time he started at that spot. Sophomore Kendall Ratter (four kills, five blocks) and freshman Corry Short (two kills, two digs) handled the outside positions at the start, while senior Zach Shaw provided a pair of kills off the bench.
Three-year starter Chris Kennedy has 20 assists and three blocks for Princeton, while senior Michael Bagnell had seven digs against the explosive Ohio State offense.
Andrew was impressive in his first start at the middle, recording seven kills on only 10 swings. Fellow middle Alex Schindele-Murayama added two kills and four blocks. Princeton outblocked Ohio State during the match.
