Senior captain Devin Stearns had a team-best 14 kills and led the Tigers on a near comeback attempt against Canadian power Laval Thursday night, but Princeton was unable to make it all the way back in a 3-1 loss in Dillon Gym.
Princeton, which dropped the opening two sets by matching 25-16 scores, showed impressive resolve midway through the third set. There were 15 tie scores and seven lead changes in the set, but the Tigers built a late lead and earned a set ball on an ace by senior Alex Schindele-Murayama. Laval fought off one, but senior Zach Shaw powered down one of his nine kills to take the set.
The Tigers continued to fight back in the fourth set, which also had 10 ties and five lead changes. This time, though, Laval had the majority of the late advantage and secured the win on a pair of blocks during extra play.
Both Shaw and sophomore Billy Andrew had nine kills, while Kendall Ratter added six. Junior Kurt Thiemann came off the bench in the third set and had five kills. Classmate Jonah May had a team-high 30 assists, while three different players had five digs.
These two teams will meet again Friday at 7 pm; the match will be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network.
