Princeton Men's Lacrosse: Portugal Day 2
October 31, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
The second day of the Princeton men's lacrosse team's Fall Break trip to Portugal was pure sightseeing. And there were some impressive sights to be seen.
The Tigers left their hotel in Monte Gordo shortly after 8 am and didn't return until after 7 at night. In between was the complete tourist experience - food, shops, history, lots of walking, and some amazing natural beauty mixed in.
Princeton is staying in the Algarve region of the country, near the border with Spain. The bus ride Monday morning took the team across the Algarve for about 90 minutes, going pretty much in a straight line east to west, with the first stop at the ancient city of Silves.
At one time, Silves was a hugely strategic city because of its proximity to a river that connected it to the Atlantic Ocean, and in fact it was the capital of the Algarve. The city dates back well over a thousand years, and it had been conquered and reconquered by Moors and Christians well into the 13th century. A major earthquake in 1755, one that was estimated to be over 9.0 on the Richter Scale, destroyed the city, which by then had lost out on its place as an important part of the region, replaced by Faro on the coast. Today, there are still remnants of an old cathedral and the castle at the very top of the city.
After touring Silves, it was off to the town of Lagos, which is directly on the Atlantic. Here the team walked through the town squares, had a very leisurely lunch and then split up to go in any number of directions, including walking along the seawall, before meeting up again to go to the final stop of the day, Ponta da Piedade.
The point overlooks the ocean in spectacular fashion. There are cliffs that go out above the water, and the views are amazing. The team took full advantage, clibing up to the highest points to take it all in. All of this, by the way, came on a day with brilliant sunshine and temperatures in the low 70s.
After that it was back to the bus and the return trip to the hotel for dinner.
The itinerary includes lacrosse again Tuesday, with a morning practice to be followed by an afternoon that will include go-cart racing. Princeton will be in Monte Gordo until Wednesday, when it will return to Lisbon for the second half of the trip. Included in the capital city will be three games against the English national team.
