Men's Squash Team Opens 2016-17 Season With Strong Showing vs. Franklin & Marshall
November 19, 2016 | Men's Squash
Princeton men's squash coach Sean Wilkinson wanted to see his young squad make a statement in its season-opening match against Franklin & Marshall Saturday afternoon at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
The Tigers delivered.
Princeton, ranked 12th in the season-opening CSA poll, routed 13th-ranked Franklin & Marshall 8-1 to begin an important opening weekend; the Tigers will look to move up the rankings Sunday when they host No. 11 George Washington.
Wilkinson got what he was hoping for from his youth. Freshmen played the 1-2 spots, and sophomores played 3-4-5, and all five won their matches. Both Adhitya Raghavan (1) and Gabriel Morgan (2) won their collegiate debuts, with Morgan's being the most dramatic. Morgan, a member of the USA Junior National Team, was pushed to five games by Silvio Soom, but he came up with an 11-5 win in the fifth to take the match.
Sophomores Clark Doyle (3) and Cody Cortes (4) were both fairly dominant, but Spencer Anton (5) put forth the most exciting win of the day for Princeton. He dropped a pair of 11-7 losses to fall down 2-0, but he came back with wins of 11-8, 11-7 and 11-9 to close the win.
Co-captains Abhimanyu Shah and Ben Leizman both earned wins, as did junior Komron Shayegan, while junior Jarryd Osborne nearly pulled off a stunning comeback. He posted a 20-18 win in the fourth to even his match at 2-2, but fell 12-10 in the fifth at the No. 9 spot.
Princeton will host George Washington Sunday at 2:30, with all courts being streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network.
