Princeton Men's Lacrosse: Portugal Day 7
November 05, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
Princeton's last full day in Portugal featured something that the team had seen almost none of during its time here: rain.
Though the forecast was for rain all day, it came down only briefly in the morning, during Princeton's stop at a school for children who have no parents and nowhere else to go. Even the presence of the rain couldn't dampen their spirits as the Princeton players introduced them to the sport of lacrosse.
There was a group of boys who were shooting at cones, trying to knock them off a ledge. There were some younger boys who just wanted to hold the sticks - and swing them. There was one girl who played catch with Strib Walker and Dawson McKenzie, who taught her how to throw behind-the-back passes.
Even when the rain started to come down harder, the children were still happy to play. And to receive the Princeton shirts, shorts and sticks that they were given, just like the slightly older kids that Princeton met in its stop in the Algarve earlier in the trip.
The school was located just a block away from where Princeton had been a day earlier, after its river cruise of the Lisbon harbor. The team spent an hour in that part of the city again after seeing the kids before bussing over to eat lunch elsewhere in Lisbon, at a restaurant in a soccer stadium. There was no game on the main field, but there were youth games being played on surrounding fields. Even during lunch, with windows that faced out onto where these kids were playing, the Princeton players were "oohing" and "aahing" at the game below them.
After that, it was off to the National Sports Center, where the Tigers had a joint practice with the English national team in advance of Sunday morning's final game between the teams, who split the first two here. The practice was followed by a dinner for the teams at the hotel that they are sharing.
Princeton and England will play Sunday morning at 8:30, and then each will head to the airport to fly home.
