PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Using a familiar formula, the Princeton women's basketball team (19-4, 8-1 Ivy) used a third quarter outburst to defeat the Brown University Bears (13-11, 1-9 Ivy), 83-57 at Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday evening.
Five different Tigers scored in double-figures, led by seniors Michelle Miller and Alex Wheatley's 14 points. Senior Amanda Berntsen continued her stellar shooting performance from Friday, going 6-of-8 (75 percent) to finish with 13 points while adding six rebounds and four assists. Senior Annie Tarakchian (12 points) and junior Vanessa Smith (11 points) were just two rebounds shy of double-doubles.
Brown began the contest with an offensive furry, making seven of its first 14 shot attempts including four of six from beyond the arc. The Bears lead 15-4 after the first six minutes, helped by six points off of Tigers' turnovers. Princeton began to make some headway on the offensive end as it scored 10 of the next 14 points and trailed by just two after one quarter, 20-18.
Berntsen gave the Tigers their first lead of the contest on a layup at 22-20, but Brown countered with a three-pointer on the next possession. The second quarter featured five lead changes before the Tigers gained some separation with an 8-0 spurt to take a 36-29 lead with 2:09 left in the first half. Princeton would take a 38-35 advantage into the locker room.
Coming out of halftime, the Tigers rattled off 13 of the first 17 points to expand their lead to 12, 51-39 with 5:31 to go in the third quarter. Princeton shot 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) in the frame while holding Brown to three baskets, leading to an 18-point lead into the fourth stanza.
Game Notes:
- Brown came into this weekend's action, holding opponents under 30 percent (28.8) from the field. Princeton finished the game, 30-of-52 (57.7 percent).
- Princeton took advantage of the worst rebounding team in the Ivy League, outrebounding Brown, 46-31. 7 Tigers had at least four rebounds.
- The Tigers blocked 13 shots, one shy of tying the team record for a game and the most since their 86-58 win over Brown on Feb. 13, 2015. Senior Taylor Williams tied her career high with five swats.
- Today's win was head coach Courtney Banghart's 100th career Ivy League win. She is one of just four coaches in conference history to reach the milestone. Banghart has a winning percentage of .847 in Ivy matchups.
- Princeton has now swept 38 of its last 41 Ivy League weekends.
