Julie Foudy and Kristine Lilly, alumnae of the U.S. Soccer Women's National Team, will be coming to campus as part of the Princeton Varsity Club's Jake McCandless '51 Speaker Series Thursday, April 21.
The event, which will be held in McCosh Hall's Room 50 at 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public.
Foudy is a former captain of the U.S. Women's National Team and one of the most accomplished female soccer players in the world. Foudy graduated from Stanford University in 1993 where she was a four-time All-America and National Player of the Year. From 1987 to 2004, Foudy was a mainstay in the midfield for the U.S Women's National Team, amassing 272 international appearances and capturing two World Cup championships (1991 and 1999) as well as two Olympic gold medals (1996 and 2004). Foudy served as the U.S. Women's National Team's co-captain from 1991-2000 and captain from 2000 through her retirement in 2004.
Foudy was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007. Following her retirement, Foudy joined ESPN, where she continues to serve as a feature reporter and lead television voice (studio and game analyst) for U.S. Soccer and World Cup coverage. In 2006, Foudy launched The Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy for girls ages 12-18, which integrates the pillars of sports and leadership.
Lilly was a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Women's National Team, and remains the most capped soccer player in the history of the sport (men or women) with 352 international match appearances. Lilly debuted with the U.S. Women's National Team while still in high school before attending the University of North Carolina, where she captured four national championships and numerous National Player of the Year accolades. Teaming with Foudy, Lilly won two World Cup championships (1991 and 1999) and two Olympic gold medals (1996 and 2004) while being tabbed as U.S. Soccer Player of the Year on three occasions. Lilly captained the U.S. National Team from 2005 to 2007.
Lilly retired in 2010 and was inducted into the U.S. Soccer and U.S. Olympic Hall of Fames shortly thereafter. She scored 130 goals in her National Team career, ranking third all-time. Lilly currently runs the Kristine Lilly Soccer Academy as well as Team First Soccer Academy with former teammates Mia Hamm and Tisha Venturini-Hoch.
