Huge Third Quarter Leads No. 3 Brown Past Princeton
April 02, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
Final Stats
There were 7.9 seconds left in the third quarter of the Princeton-Brown men's lacrosse game when the Bears won a face-off, came down and took a shot - and saw that the clock still said 7.9 seconds left.
Hey, Brown can be excused for not wanting to see the quarter end.
Brown played an incredible third quarter, turning a one-goal game at halftime into one where the outcome was no longer in doubt in those 14:52.1 minutes. After another 15 minutes, the third-ranked Bears had closed out their 19-8 win over Princeton in Providence.
Princeton trailed 5-0 in the first quarter before making it a 7-6 game at halftime. The Bears, the No. 1 scoring offense team in the country, scored just once in the second quarter, and Princeton had played a strong possession game that limited Brown to 15 first half shots. Helping that cause was an even split of face-offs and 7 for 14 for each team, with Brown the No. 1 face-off team in the country.
The momentum disappeared quickly though. Brown took 18 shots in the third quarter and scored nine goals including five by Dylan Molloy, who finished the day with six goal and five assists. Brown won 9 of 11 face-offs in the quarter.
Brown went up 11-6 with four goals in the first four minutes of the third quarter, but Princeton answered with goals from Riley Thompson and Austin Sims to make it 11-8. Molloy then took over, scoring twice in six seconds and then assisting on another goal 28 seconds after that, pushing it 14-8. The Brown run woud see the home team score the final eight of the day.
