Shweisky Reflects On Qualifying USA Youth National Team For 2017 U-19 World Championships
July 26, 2016 | Men's Volleyball
It may be early for most people to plan summer trips for 2017, but Sam Shweisky already has one on his calendar.
Shweisky, who will enter his eighth season as the head coach of the Princeton men's volleyball team when the 2017 season begins, will lead the U.S. Boys' Youth National Team (BYNT) to Bahrain next summer to compete in the FIVB U-19 World Championships. Shweisky, currently serving as head coach of the USA BYNT, assured a spot in the tournament by guiding his American squad to the championship match of the 2016 NORCECA Championships, which were held in Havana, Cuba.
"Having the opportunity to travel to Cuba with the USA BYNT was an experience none of us will ever forget," Shweisky said. "From being some of the first Americans to travel to Cuba in the post-embargo era, to seeing all the amazing 1950 cars, to the amazing warmth and hospitality of the Cuban people, to meeting Shaquille O'Neal (see photo below), to qualifying for the World Championships, it was an amazing experience. The semifinal match with Mexico was one of the most exhilarating matches I have ever been a part of. I am so proud of the guys and how they competed in that match. I can't wait to head to Bahrain next summer for the FIVB U-19 World Championships."
The semifinal match clinched the spot at the FIVB U-19 World Championships, and it took extra points in the final set before the American side came away with the 17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 17-15 victory. Team USA pushed Cuba to another five-set thriller in the final, though the Cuban side came away with the 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 15-11 victory in a showdown of the two undefeated teams throughout the tournament.
Of course, before Shweisky takes his trip to Bahrain, he will be focusing on a Princeton team looking to return to the EIVA postseason. The former EIVA Head Coach of the Year brought in a highly touted recruiting class to merge with a talented young core from the 2016 season, including All-EIVA middle blocker Junior Oboh.
