Incoming Freshman George Huhmann Leads USA Junior National Team To International Title
August 23, 2016 | Men's Volleyball
USA Volleyball proved that it remains one of the elite programs in the world by winning medals on both the men's and women's sides in Rio. Weeks before the Olympics began, one incoming Tiger helped show the world that the future of USA Volleyball looks strong as well.
George Huhmann, an incoming freshman for the Princeton men's volleyball team, helped lead the USA Junior National Team to a victory at the 2016 NORCECA Under-21 Continental Championship, a win that qualified Team USA for the 2017 FIVB U-21 World Championship in Prague.
Huhmann was a starting middle on Team USA, and he recorded six kills, a block and an ace in the 25-17, 29-27, 19-25, 25-22 championship victory over Cuba. Huhmann had a strong tournament for the undefeated American side, which won 12 of 13 individual sets throughout its title run.
"I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to play for my country and to be selected to such a talented group of individuals," Huhmann said prior to the championship week. "Representing the United States in international volleyball is an experience not to be taken for granted, and I'm very excited for the future."
He is not alone in that excitement. Princeton head coach Sam Shweisky, who helped the Boys National Team qualify for the 2017 FIVB U-19 World Championships earlier this summer, can't wait to see Huhmann exchange the Red, White & Blue for Orange & Black.
"I am so proud of George for helping the Boys Junior National Team to qualify for the World Championships next year in Prague," Shweisky said. "Having a chance to be exposed to international volleyball is such a valuable experience, and we can't wait for George to take what he has learned from his travels to the Princeton gym."
Huhmann is part of a highly touted men's volleyball Class of 2020. You can read about the full class here.
