Princeton To Play Fall Game Against Denver On William G. Tierney Field

Nearly 30 years after coming to Princeton to resurrect the men's lacrosse program, Bill Tierney will finally root against the Tigers.
Tierney and his Denver Pioneers will take on his former team in a fall game, and the home field advantage will definitely be with the Hall of Fame coach. In fact, it's his field, as the game will be played on William G. Tierney Field, which is at the U.S. Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md.
Princeton and Denver will play on Tierney Field on Oct. 15, with face-off at 2. Tickets for the game will be $8.
"This is a great opportunity for our team and our players," said Princeton head coach Matt Madalon. "First, we're looking forward to playing Denver in what should be a great fall game. Second, this is a real tribute to Coach Tierney, who did so much during his time as Princeton's head coach and who continues to be such a huge supporter of our program."
Tierney coached Princeton from 1988-2009. Inheriting a team that went 3-12 the year before he arrived, Tierney won the first of six NCAA championships at Princeton in 1992, and he would add titles in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2001 while putting together a record of 238-86.
He then left to coach the Pioneers, who had never won an NCAA tournament game prior to his arrival. Tierney has taken Denver to seven NCAA tournaments in seven years, including four Final Fours and the 2015 NCAA title, making him the only coach to win NCAA titles with two different schools. His record at Denver is 96-28.
Madalon will be in his first full season as Princeton head coach.
The naming of Tierney Field was a part of the National Campaign for Lacrosse, a $15 million capital campaign funded by private donors, which helped result in the construction of new headquarters for US Lacrosse and financial support for US Lacrosse programs focused on increasing opportunity for play and safety initiatives.
