2018 Princeton Men's Lacrosse Schedule - days and times could change due to coming television announcements
The Princeton men's lacrosse schedule will have something of a new feel in 2018.
Nearly half of Princeton's non-league opponents will be different in 2018, beginning with the season-opener against Monmouth Feb. 17. Gone from the schedule for the first time in 19 years will be Hofstra, and ACC opponent Virginia returns to the regular-season schedule for the first time since 2008.
Monmouth is one of two first-team opponents for Princeton, along with Siena, whom Princeton will play in April. The addition of the Monmouth game means that for the first time, Princeton will play all three of New Jersey's other Division I opponents.
The Tigers will play 13 regular-season games, including the six Ivy opponents. Princeton will play at Virginia in Week 2 and Johns Hopkins in Week 3, playing those two in consecutive weeks as the Tigers did every year from 1993 through 2008. Princeton and UVA last met in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA tournament.
"We're always going to want to play a challenging schedule," Princeton coach Matt Madalon said. "Every game in the league is difficult. Getting Virginia back on the schedule gives us an ACC opponent, which is important to us. I love the idea of playing the New Jersey teams, and Monmouth has done a great job with the program there, reaching the NCAA tournament last year. We're keeping NJIT, and of course the long-standing rivalries with our two Big Ten opponents Rutgers and Hopkins are huge for us. Stony Brook is a nice fit in our schedule since we have the same weekend out of the league each year, and we're looking forward to playing Siena as well."
Princeton went 9-6 in 2017 and reached the Ivy League tournament. The Tigers return seven starters, though the three they lost will be difficult to replace - Gavin McBride led the nation in goals per game, Bear Goldstein was a first-team All-Ivy selection and four-year starter on defense and Zach Currier was arguably the best all-around player in college lacrosse the last few years.
Among Princeton's key returnees are Michael Sowers, who set the Princeton record for points in a season with 82 (41G, 41A) as a freshman a year ago; midfielder Austin Sims, who had back-to-back six goal games before getting injured; goalie Tyler Blaisdell, a first-team All-Ivy selection; and attackman Riley Thompson, a 40-point scorer in 2017. Daniel Winschuh, Arman Medghalchi and Charlie Durbin are also returning starters.
