Volleyball Claims Senior Day Win, Heads Into Final Weekend In Tie For First In Ivy League
November 04, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team got everything it wanted out of its final home match of the 2017 season. The Tigers sent their four seniors — MaryClaire Bartlett, Maddie Huber, Kelly Matthews, and Alex Thompson — out with one final victory inside Dillon Gym, and they made sure they remained atop the Ivy League standings with one weekend to go.
For the second straight night, Princeton used a highly efficient offense to avenge an earlier regular-season loss. One day after sweeping Columbia, the Tigers hit .368 in a dominant 25-16, 25-21, 25-17 home win over Cornell. That victory, along with a 3-0 Yale win over Dartmouth, means that both Princeton and Yale head into the final weekend of the Ivy season with 9-3 records. No other team has more than seven Ivy wins, thanks to a 3-2 home victory for Brown over Harvard.
Princeton got another big effort from junior middle Caroline Sklaver, who had 11 kills on 16 swings (.563), and added three blocks, while sophomore Maggie O'Connell had 10 kills without an error (.435) and added five digs and a block. Freshman Alexa Underwood, who completed her first full weekend as a starter, had nine kills and 12 digs, while fellow outside Devon Peterkin has nine kills, eight digs and two service aces.
Sophomore setter Jessie Harris paced the Tigers with 37 assists, while Huber added 14 digs in her final match in Dillon Gym. Matthews, who joined Huber as co-captains for the 2017 season, added nine digs and two assists in the win.
Princeton will begin its critical final weekend Friday night in Cambridge, Mass., where it will take on Harvard at 7 pm. Both matches next weekend — the Tigers play at Dartmouth Saturday at 5 — will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
