It's not often that you see a college lacrosse game where the combined goal total is higher than the temperature.

For that matter, it's also a rarity when the combined first quarter goals is higher than the wind chill.

On a frozen night in Piscataway, here were the numbers:
Combined goals – 27
Temperature at game time – 24
Goals in the first quarter – seven
Wind chill at game time – four

Rutgers, ranked fifth in the country, defeated Princeton 16-11 in front of a handful of hearty souls at High Point Solutions Stadium. The game was postponed for 24 hours due to the ice and snowstorm Tuesday night, though the conditions weren't much better, with freezing temps and snow that fell in the third quarter.

Princeton, ranked 15^th, fell to 4-2 on the season and now has a quick turnaround to Saturday's Ivy League opener, at Franklin Field against the 19^th ranked Penn Quakers.

With the win, Rutgers wins the Meistrell Cup for just the second time in the last 28 years. The game was the first between the teams since 2004 when both came in ranked.

NOTES

* Michael Sowers led Princeton with three goals and two assists for five points. Sowers, who has at least four points in every game this season, moved into a tie for third in assists for a season by a freshman (after playing less than half the season), tied with Jon Hess and Ryan Ambler at 17 for the year, trailing only Kevin Lowe (43) and Ryan Boyle (37). Sowers is also now seventh among Princeton freshman for points in a season with 31.

* Riley Thompson, Gavin McBride and Austin Sims all had two goals each, and McBride also had an assist for a three-point night. Sims had had consecutive games of six goals coming into this one.

* Zach Currier had a one-goal, one-assist, 10-ground ball night. It was his third game this year with at least 10 ground balls.

* Princeton led 1-0 on a goal by Sims in the first minute and 2-1 after Sowers had his first midway through the opening quarter, but the Scarlet Knights scored two goals 29 seconds apart to take the lead that they would hold for the final 51:19. Princeton would cut it to one at 11-10 early in the fourth, but Rutgers scored twice in 23 seconds to get it back to three. It would never be closer than that.

* Rutgers goalie Max Edelmann made 14 saves, several of which were the game-changing variety.
