Junior Oboh Earns Second EIVA Defensive Player of the Week Honor
March 27, 2017 | Men's Volleyball
All-East middle Junior Oboh earned his second EIVA Defensive Player of the Week honor this month after posting a brilliant defensive performance during a challenging road trip for the Princeton men's volleyball team.
Oboh averaged 1.5 blocks per set during matches at #3 BYU and Grand Canyon, including a seven-block showing in an exciting four-set showdown at BYU. He had another seven-block effort in one of the two matches at Grand Canyon, the top team receiving votes in the latest AVCA poll, and he had four blocks in a 3-1 victory over the Antelopes.
While Oboh was honored for his defensive performance, he continues to be one of the most efficient hitters in the nation. He hit .519 for the weekend (17-3-27), including an .857 performance in the final match of the week. His hitting percentage of .429 would rank ninth in the NCAA if he had enough attempts (3.3 per set) this season; based on the number of sets he has played, Oboh would have needed 235 attempts to qualify.
He currently has 233.
"I am very proud of what Junior accomplished for our team this past week on our spring break trip," head coach Sam Shweisky said. "He is emerging as our vocal and emotional leader on and off the court. Junior plays with passion and drive on every touch and he is inspiring his teammates, as well as holding them accountable. Junior has been focused on his improving his blocking the past few weeks in training and it has paid off. I am excited to see him continue to improve his blocking and other facets of his game as we head into the back half of conference play."
Oboh will lead Princeton on a crucial road trip this weekend, which begins Friday in State College against 13th-ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions currently lead the EIVA with a 6-2 record, while Princeton is tied for second at 6-3. The Nittany Lions fought off a match ball and won the first meeting in Princeton 3-2 in February.
