Currier, Sowers, Sims Earn Honors; Tigers Move Into Rankings
March 06, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse
Zach Currier did what Zach Currier does against Johns Hopkins Friday afternoon. So did Michael Sowers and Austin Sims.
Together, they were a huge part of why Princeton defeated the then-No. 3 Blue Jays 18-7 last week. The three started this week with some individual recognition - and by knowing that their team was back in the national rankings.
Johns Hopkins can be excused for being happy that it won't see Currier again. For the second straight time against the Blue Jays, Currier was named Ivy League Player of the Week, this time with a ridiculous three-assist, 10-ground ball, 15 for 19 face-off day that helped Princeton dominate possession. During the game's decisive 10-0 run spanning the second and third quarters, Currier went 7 for 7 on face-offs, helping Princeton score those 10 goals during a time when Hopkins would take only three shots.
Currier did not play against Hopkins last year, but two years ago he won the Ivy Player of the Week award after a two-goal, three-assist, eight ground ball, 6 for 8 face-off day in another Princeton win. Added together, and Currier's line against Hopkins the last two times he faced the team was this: two goals, six assists, 18 ground balls, 21 for 27 facing off.
For the season, no other Princeton player has reached double figures in ground balls. Currier by himself has 31. He also has eight goals and eight assists.
As for Sowers, he wins his second-straight Ivy League Rookie of the Week Award after his two goals and two assists in the game Friday. Sowers has had at least four points in all four games this year, and he leads the team with 11 assists and 20 points. Should Sowers not have another point in either of his next two games, he'd still have more points than any other Princeton freshman after six games.
Sims was named the Epoch/US Lacrosse Player of the Week for his six-goal, seven-point performance against the Blue Jays, both of which were career highs. Sims scored Princeton's first two goals, including an astonishing rocket in traffic that earned SportsCenter's No. 2 play of the day Friday, and he added three more during the 10-0 run.Â
Sims did not play in Princeton's game against Hofstra, which is the only loss for the Tigers to date.
The win over Hopkins lifted Princeton into both the media and coaches' polls, at No. 19 in each.
The Tigers host Quinnipiac Tuesday night.
