Michael Sowers is putting together the best season ever by an Ivy League freshman. There haven't been too many midfielders who have ever put together a season like the one Zach Currier currently is.
When the list of the final 25 nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy were announced Friday morning, it was no shock that both were on it.
Sowers and Currier are among the 25 nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy, given annually to the top player in college lacrosse. The five finalists will be announced on May 11, and the winner will be announced in Washington, D.C., on June 1.
Though neither Sowers nor Currier was on original watchlist and Sowers was not one of the midseason additions, both have had completely dominant seasons while helping Princeton back into the national rankings.
Sowers has already set the Ivy League record for points in a season by a freshman with 70 (33G, 37A), and he is also the only Ivy League freshman ever - and only Princeton player ever, regardless of class year - with at least 30 goals and 35 assists in a season. Sowers is the fourth Princeton player ever to reach 70 points in a season, and he sits eight points away from thing Mike MacDonald's school record of 78 with at least two games to play.
Sowers, the only freshman among the 25 nominees, leads the Ivy League and is fourth in Division I in both assists and points.
As for Currier, his numbers are absurd. The senior is fifth in Division I in assists - and the only midfielder in the top 17 - with 32, and he also has 21 goals, making him the second midfielder in program history (along with Tom Schreiber) with at least 20 goals and 30 assists in a season. Beyond that, Currier also has won 80 of 143 face-offs and has 102 ground balls, a total that is 74 more than the next-best total on the team.
He is the first player in program history with at least 50 points and 100 ground balls in the same season.
