Sowers Earns Fourth Ivy League Rookie Of The Week Award
April 03, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse
The remarkable freshman season for Princeton's Michael Sowers added another chapter this past Saturday, which was quickly followed by another award come Monday.
Sowers had a five-goal, four-assist, nine-point game in Princeton's 21-11 win over Brown Saturday afternoon, a performance that earned him his fourth Ivy League Rookie of the Week Award, to go along with one Ivy Player of the Week award earlier this year as well. Sowers had all four of his assists in the first half and all five of his goals in the second half.
Danny Winschuh, who helped hold Dylan Molloy, the reigning Tewaaraton Trophy and Ivy Player of the Year winner, to a goal and two assists - eight points fewer than he had against Princeton a year ago - was named to the Ivy honor roll.
As for Sowers, the list of his accomplishments continues to grow.
Prior to the start of this season, only 12 Princeton players had ever had nine or more points in a game. Sowers has now done it twice in his first nine career games. He has also become the first Princeton freshman ever to have at least 20 goals and at least 20 assists in a season.
Â
He leads Princeton with 51 points, making him the 21st player in program history to reach the 50-point mark for a season (those 21 players have combined to do it 37 times). He is the first freshman to do so, and he has done so, again, in nine games.
As for freshman scoring at Princeton, Sowers ranks third, behind two of the greatest college lacrosse players of all-time: Kevin Lowe (55 points in 1991) and Ryan Boyle (53 points in 2001). His 24 goals are four away from tying the school freshman record, held by Mike Chanenchuk.
Sowers leads the Ivy League in assists per game and points per game, and he is fifth in the first and third in the second in Division I. He also ranks 15th in Division I in goals per game.
In addition to Sowers, Princeton has other players ranked in the top 10 nationally in individual stats.
Zach Currier ranks fourth in Division I in ground balls per game and ninth in assists per game, while Gavin McBride is fifth in the country in goals per game and first in the country in man-up goals.
Tyler Blaisdell is fourth in Division I in save per game and one spot out of the top 10 in save percentage.
As a team, Princeton continues to be first in Division I team shooting percentage and has moved up to second in scoring offense at 15.2 goals per game, a better-than 50 percent improvement over last year. Princeton is also second in assists per game, seventh in ground balls per game, eighth in man-down defense, sixth in man-up offense, second in points per game and fourth in scoring margin.
Princeton, ranked 13th this week by the coaches and 15th this week in the media poll, is at Stony Brook Saturday. The Tigers are 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League.
