Sowers' 40/40 Season - An Ivy League And Freshman Rarity
May 06, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse
Michael Sowers finished his freshman year at Princeton with a program-record 82 points, on 41 goals and 41 assists.
Other than Sowers, only two other Princeton players have ever had at least 30 goals and 30 assists in the same season - David Tickner (32G, 34A) in 1976 and Mike MacDonad (48G, 30A) in 2015. MacDonald's senior total of 78 points was the record until Sowers broke it this year.
Among the ton of accomplishments from Sowers' ridiculous freshman year, he also is the fifth player in Ivy League history ever to have a 40-40 season. The other four players who did so were Jim Trenz of Cornell in 1974, Mike French of Cornell in 1976, Rob Pannell of Cornell in 2011 and Dylan Molloy of Brown in 2016.
In addition, Sowers joins Randy Mearns of Canisius as the only Division I freshmen ever to have a 40-40 season. Mearns, the current Canisius head coach, did so in 1990.
