Name: Hailey Reeves
Team: Field Hockey
Year: Senior
Major: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
High School: Collingwood School
Hometown: West Vancouver, B.C.
Athletic Accomplishments: Reeves played in 70 career games for Princeton, not missing a game over the previouis three years. The senior tied her personal best with three goals in 2017 as the Tigers advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the seventh time in program history.
Off The Field:
Last summer, Hailey went to Rio de Janiero in Brazil to study the clinical implications of the Zika virus on babies. She worked in a hospital (maternal and child care hospital) and gathered information by talking to patients, looking at medical records and lab data. Dealing with mostly pregnant mothers, Reeves had to teach herself the Portuguese language to find out when they were infected with the Zika virus.
Prior to her trip to Brazil, Reeves noted that scientific literature said that it was worst to be infected earlier in pregnancy, but had not associated with how severe and what it all means.
What the senior found in her research was that the time of Zika infections during pregnancy had a huge influence on whether or not a child will have some sort of defect and that the first trimester is the worst to be infected. The virus also caused malformations in the placenta, something that had not been shown before. With that information, the placenta can be used as a diagnostic tool now that there's more scientific data to back that up.
Hailey on Hailey:
"Time management is a huge factor when you're a student athlete at Princeton, but it's taken to a whole new level when you're taking four classes, you have to be on your game at practice and games and on top of that, write a thesis," said Reeves. "There's a lot of time management, but it's very rewarding when you get it all done."
