MLL Roundup Includes League Honor For Fiorito
June 20, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse
Zach Currier, now of the Denver Outlaws, has scored three goals in his first two Major League Lacrosse games, both of which were against the Boston Cannons. That means that the opposing goalie against whom Currier scored all three was none other than Tyler Fiorito, a fellow Princeton alum.
That little note notwithstanding, it was still a good week for Fiorito. One week after Denver beat Boston in Currier's debut, Fiorito bounced back to make 19 saves in the rematch, leading the Cannons to a 16-9 win and earning MLL Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Fiorito is third in the league with 108 saves, three off the league lead. A year ago, when he was an MLL all-star, he finished second, by one save.
As for Currier, his line through two games is three goals, three assists, two caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Even with the loss last weekend, Denver is tied with the Ohio Machine for first place, at 5-2.
Speaking of the Machine, Ohio's Tom Schreiber, the reigning MLL Most Valuable Player, missed the first four weeks of the 2017 season while playing with the Toronto Rock in the National Lacrosse League. Despite only having played three games, Schreiber is fourth in the league in assists with 12 and has five goals, giving him 17 points.
Kip Orban has six goals in six games as a midfielder for Rochester. Orban, who had 13 goals last year for the Rattlers, also has four caused turnover and four ground balls.
Ryan Ambler has played in three games for Denver and scored his first MLL goal against New York on April 29. Gavin McBride was drafted by the Outlaws but has not yet played.
Assistant coach Jesse Bernhardt, a defenseman for the Chesapeake Bayhawks, has three assists, 30 ground balls and nine caused turnovers. Bernhardt is ninth in the league in ground balls and third among non-face-off men.
