Andersen's World Cup Blog Part 2
July 21, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
Well, it's been quite an eventful week. During pool play, we defeated Colombia and Sweden handily while suffering our only loss to the strong New Zealand team. Moving into bracketed play, we defeated Italy 13-12 in an incredibly exciting and fun game. Today, however, we suffered another disappointing loss to the Czech Republic. Admittedly, the loss is tough to swallow but we will continue on, fighting like we always do to finish out the tournament strong in our last two games.
And while its easy to get upset over losses, especially when the great group of women that I am surrounded by deserve to win more than anything, it is really the amazing people and players participating in these games that remind me why playing in the World Cup is such a privilege. How many people can say they've met their 'number twin' from Colombia or from Sweden?Â
Â
How many people can say their teammates include an orthopedic surgeon, a special education teacher, and a PhD student specializing in horses? How many people can say they've played against opponents speaking five different languages in the span of just eight days? Not many. Not many at all.
So while I'll decompress tonight by watching the latest episode of Love Island with my teammates, I'll try to forget the tough loss on the field and focus on how much I have won just by being in this tournament and on this team. Sure, my legs are getting sore and my arms are getting bruised, but it's the competition and the fight that make every game fun. And make no mistake, Ireland will finish this tournament with two strong wins, singing loud and waving our flag proud.
