Schreiber Wins MVP, MLL Championship, Despite Monster Game From Currier
August 20, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse
Tom Schreiber had a pretty good weekend. A nearly perfect one actually.
It started Friday night, when the Princeton alum won the Major League Lacrosse Most Valuable Player Award for the second-straight year and continued Saturday, when he helped the Ohio Machine to the first MLL championship in franchise history. Schreiber had a goal and three assists in the final, as Ohio used a massive fourth quarter to defeat the Denver Outlaws 17-12 in Frisco, Texas.
Denver led 10-6 in the third quarter and 12-10 in the fourth before Ohio scored the final seven goals of the night. It was a reversal of a year ago, when Denver defeated Ohio 19-18 after trailing 9-3 at one point.
For Schreiber, the last 12 months have seen him win the 2016 MLL MVP Award, the 2017 National Lacrosse League Rookie of the Year Award (with the Toronto Rock) and now the 2017 MVP award and league championship.
The championship game loss did little to diminish the effort of Denver rookie and Princeton alum Zach Currier, who also had a a goal and three assists, as well as four ground balls and three caused turnovers. He also drew several penalties from the Machine with his relentlessness.
The end of the first half saw a great flurry by the two Princeton players. First, Schreiber threw a perfect lookaway pass to game MVP Marcus Holman for an extra man goal, one of Holman's four on the night, to go along with two assists.
Currier then took the ground ball off the face-off, raced down the field, scored and drew a man advantage after a late hit. He cashed that in with a perfect 20-yard pass to Michael Bocklett on the back side, who scored just as time expired to make it 7-6 Outlaws at the break.

I still don't know why Zach Currier wasn't a first-team All-American this year.
