Road Gauntlet, Loaded With Top-10 Powers, Awaits Men's Volleyball Team In 2018

Head coach Sam Shweisky knows how hard it is to win in the postseason, and he is making sure his Princeton squad is as tested as possible this year.
The Princeton men's volleyball team, which returns six starters from a team that served a match ball in both regular-season contests with eventual EIVA champion Penn State last year, will face arguably its toughest first month of competition in program history when the 2018 season begins. The Tigers will make a pair of California trips during January and will face five teams ranked in the final AVCA Top-15 poll last season, as well as one of the three teams receiving votes.
Princeton, which returned to the EIVA postseason last year, will open its 2018 season on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at USC (ranked 11th at the end of the 2017 season). At the end of that opening week, Princeton will play three matches in Santa Barbara, including one against #3 Long Beach State, and another against #9 Stanford.
The Tigers will return to Princeton for finals — and its Jan. 12 home opener against IPFW — and then return to California before the spring semester for three more road matches, including matches at #6 UCLA (Feb. 1) and #8 Pepperdine (Feb. 3).
And that's just the first month.
The Tigers will open league play with three straight road matches, beginning with a pair in Charleston (Feb. 9-10), and then a match at George Mason, before playing their first home weekend Feb. 23-24 against Harvard and Sacred Heart. The Tigers will host St. Francis (the highest team outside the Top 15) and #10 Penn State the following weekend, with the Nittany Lion match set for 7 pm on Saturday, March 3.
