What a difference a year has made for Jessie Harris, Maggie O'Connell, and Devon Peterkin.
Around this time last fall, the Tiger trio was figuring out campus, class schedules and adjusting to life as a collegiate student-athlete. Now they are reigning All-Ivy starters on a championship team, and they are ready to get back to Dillon Court for what they hope will be the start of another championship journey.
Princeton (2-1) will open its 2017 home schedule Wednesday night (7 pm) against Garden State rival Seton Hall (4-1), a match you can watch live on the Ivy League Network (subscription required). Links for both the live video and live stats are available at the top of this release.
While Peterkin missed the opening weekend with an injury, both Harris and O'Connell showed impressive form early during the Beantown Challenge. Princeton went 2-1, including a comeback win over Boston College in the season opener; O'Connell poured in 22 kills in that match, and she added 11 more in a win over Bryant to complete the weekend. Harris started at setter all three matches, averaged 36 assists per contest and ended up on the all-tournament team, along with junior middle Caroline Sklaver.
As if that isn't impressive enough … none of those three sophomores lead their own class in kills after one weekend. That honor belongs to Natasha Skov, who put down 39 balls in her first three career starts last weekend.
Princeton will be tested often this week, beginning Wednesday against a Seton Hall team that already owns an impressive road win at Oklahoma; the Pirates will bring a three-match win streak to Dillon Gym, and will try to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Tigers last fall.
The Tigers will head to Philadelphia this weekend to compete in the Villanova Tournament; they will play the host Wildcats Friday at 1:30, and then will take on Albany at 5 pm. Princeton will conclude play Saturday at 11 am against Connecticut.
