Despite Another Cortes Comeback, Top-Ranked Trinity Tops Princeton 8-1
February 16, 2018 | Men's Squash
The top-ranked Trinity Bantams improved to 16-0 on the season by sweeping each of the first two shifts Friday night against the seventh-ranked Princeton Tigers, who fell 8-1 in the penultimate match of the 2017-18 regular season.
Ultimately, if Princeton wants to avoid seeing Trinity exactly one week later, the Tigers will need to defeat eighth-ranked Rochester Saturday at 3 pm on the Trinity courts. The loser of that match is likely to enter next weekend's national team championships as the eighth seed.
Trinity jumped on a shorthanded Princeton lineup that played without usual starters Adhitya Raghavan and Alex Engstrom. The Bantams didn't drop a single game during wins at the third, sixth and ninth positions, though Clark Doyle pushed Michael Craig in a couple of tough games at the #3 spot.
Trinity clinched the win in the middle shift with wins at 2, 5, and 8, but Princeton showed impressive resilience during the final shift of the match. Despite not being able to get the team win, freshman Youssef Ibrahim, junior Cody Cortes, and senior co-captain Komron Shayegan battled in an exciting final shift that could be a springboard into the critical upcoming week.
Both Ibrahim and Cortes went down 2-0 in their respective matches, but both found a second gear entering the third. There should have been no surprise that Cortes was ready for a marathon night, as he made a habit of wild five-game wins throughout his sophomore season. He fought off Trinity veteran Rick Penders for a pair of 12-10 wins to get to a fifth game, and then he pulled away midway through the fifth for an 11-7 victory.
Ibrahim, who has rallied from tough starts throughout his impressive debut season, claimed wins of 11-9 and 11-7 to force a fifth game, though Kumar used a late surge in the finale for an 11-8 win. Shayegan, playing at the #7 spot for the first time in 2018, had a gritty effort to win the fourth game 13-11, but Aryaman Adik closed strong for the 3-2 win.
