Men's Squash Takes Aim At Powers Trinity, Rochester In Final Tuneup For Nationals
February 16, 2018 | Men's Squash
The Princeton men's squash team will return to the championship flight at the CSA team nationals next weekend for the first time since 2013, and they have a chance to take some serious momentum into the weekend based on the results from two matches against 'A' flight opponents during the final days of the regular season.
Seventh-ranked Princeton (9-4) faces #1 Trinity (15-0) Friday night at 6 pm, and then will face #8 Rochester (6-5) Saturday at 3 pm, also on the Trinity courts, in the final matches of an exciting 2017-18 regular season. The results from those matches could land the Tigers anywhere between fifth and eighth in the CSA Championships next weekend — which will also be held at Trinity.
The Tigers continue to have a versatile lineup, though youth continues to lead the team at the top of the lineup. Freshman Youssef Ibrahim is 12-1 at the #1 spot, and he is coming off the biggest win of his young career, a 3-2 victory over reigning individual champion Osama Khalifa of Columbia last Friday night. Sophomore Adhitya Raghavan (9-4) and freshman Cole Becker (7-5) hold the #2 and #3 spots, respectively, and both have provided important wins during the season.
Of course, veteran leadership has been there as well, especially from the likes of co-captains Abhimanyu Shah and Komron Shayegan, both of whom are a combined 16-8 on the season. That duo will play in the A flight of nationals for the first time in their careers next weekend, and both would love nothing more than to send a message to the field in their final matches before the championship weekend.
Trinity is unbeaten on the season, though it has had some close matches during the season against St. Lawrence (5-4), Columbia (6-3), and Yale (6-3). Rochester is in familiar territory as Princeton, having played 5-4 matches against the likes of both Penn and Dartmouth this season.
