Harvard Tops Men's Squash; Tigers Look To Keep Ivy Hopes Alive At Dartmouth
February 03, 2018 | Men's Squash
Three days removed from a thrilling 5-4 road win at Penn, the Princeton men's squash team couldn't quite muster the same energy and efficiency Saturday afternoon at third-ranked Harvard. The reigning Ivy League champion Crimson, playing with its backs against the wall in the Ivy League race, took control of the match from the start and posted a 9-0 win over the Tigers at the Murr Squash Courts in Boston.
The highlight match certainly lived up to the hype, as Crimson sophomore and reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Saadeldin Abouaish defeated Princeton freshman Youssef Ibrahim 11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8 in a high-intensity, well-played thriller. Playing on his home glass court and in front of an enthusiastic Crimson crowd, Abouaish was able to grab a lead at 9-9 in the fifth, and his final drive along the right wall was unreturnable for Ibrahim, who lost the first match of his collegiate career.
Harvard showed the strength of its depth throughout the rest of the lineup, as Princeton was only able to muster individual game wins by freshmen Duncan Joyce (#6) and Alex Engstrom (#8). Junior Cody Cortes saw his 10-match Ivy League win streak come to an end at the #5 position, though he pushed Madhav Dhingra in two very tight opening games.
While the Crimson needed the win to stay alive in the Ivy League race, Princeton will still control its own destiny heading into the final weekend if it can pull off a Super Sunday upset at #5 Dartmouth (noon). The Big Green have won two straight in the series.
