Sowers Becomes Fastest To 100 Points As Princeton Tops NJIT
March 06, 2018 | Men's Lacrosse
Michael Sowers came into Princeton's game against NJIT needing three points to become the 34th Princeton player ever to reach 100 for his career.
Though he had three games to do it if he wanted to be the fastest Princeton player ever to reach the century mark, it would actually take him a little more than 10 minutes of the first quarter get there. By the time his night was over early in the third quarter, he was at 105 career points on 49 goals and 56 assists and had added another record to his growing portfolio of them.
Sowers had a three-goal, five-assist, eight-point night to lead Princeton to a 15-8 win over NJIT in a game that was 6-1 at the end of the first quarter and 9-3 at halftime. The win evened Princeton's record at 2-2, with the two wins both against New Jersey teams, including an opening-day victory over Monmouth. Princeton will go for the state championship, as it were, when it hosts Rutgers Saturday at 1.
As for the game over NJIT, Sowers started Princeton on its way with a goal 49 seconds in, and would add three assists before the quarter ended. His feed to Strib Walker with 4:56 left in the first gave him point No. 100.
It took Sowers 18 games and one quarter to get there. The previous fastest run to 100 was 22 games, set by both David Tickner and Wick Sollers, who got there in the same game back in 1976. Sowers had a school-record 82 points as a freshman and now has 23 more in four games so far this year.
NOTES
* While Sowers was going over 100 points, it was also a night of firsts for several players. Freshman George Baughan made his first career start on defense. Walker had his first career goal on the Sowers 100th and then added another one later on for a two-goal night. Jamie Atkinson, another freshman, had his first career goal as well, which came within seconds of when he stepped on the field for the first time.
* Princeton's other reliable veterans also had big nights. Riley Thompson tied his career high with three, giving him four career three-goal games, and Austin Sims had a three-goal, two-assist night.
* Emmet Cordrey scored for the third straight game, giving him five goals in that stretch. Freshman Chris Brown had a goal and an assist and has at least one of each in all four of Princeton's games. Dawson McKenzie had the other Tiger score.
* Princeton won 19 of 27 face-offs in the game. Individually, Ralph Chrappa won 11 of 14, Jack-Henry Vara won 6 of 10 and Philip Thompson won 2 of 3.
* Andrew Song had two more caused turnovers and three more ground balls.
* Princeton leads the series with NJIT 3-0. Princeton and Monmouth met for the first time, and the Tigers will now play Rutgers for the 95th time.
