All-East Opposite George Huhmann Claims All-America Honorable Mention
April 30, 2018 | Men's Volleyball
Sophomore George Huhmann is quickly building one of the most impressive resumés in the legacy of Princeton men's volleyball. One year after earning the EIVA Newcomer of the Year award, Huhmann earned All-America distinction following a brilliant sophomore season.
Huhmann, who earned his second First-Team All-EIVA honor this spring, claimed All-America Honorable Mention, it was announced April 30 by the AVCA. Huhmann was one of only four players in the EIVA to earn All-America accolades, and one of only two (joining George Mason's Hayden Wagner) who will return next season.
"We are very proud of George and all he has accomplished this year," head coach Sam Shweisky said. "Moving from a middle blocker to playing to a hybrid midle blocker/opposite, and then to full opposite, was a lot to ask and George made the transition while leading our team in several offensive categories. George joins great company as the fourth Princeton Volleyball All-American, and it's exciting to think about the player he can become over the next two seasons. The sky is the limit for George, and we are very excited to watch him continue to grow and improve."
Huhmann joins the like of Marin Gjaja '91, Derek Devens '98, and Cody Kessel '15 as AVCA All-Americans.
Huhmann was brilliant in leading Princeton from an 0-4 league start to a spot in the 2018 EIVA championship match. He won three EIVA Offensive Player of the Week honors, including the most recent after leading the Tigers to their first win ever at Penn State, and he added a Defensive Player of the Week award following home wins over Penn State and Saint Francis. He was named to the EIVA All-Tournament team after averaging 17 kills per match and helping Princeton upset top-seeded George Mason, and he had 19 kills while hitting over .300 in the final.
Huhmann ended the regular season as the EIVA leader in kills/set (3.6) and points/set (4.5), and he ranks fourth in blocks/set (1.1). Those numbers translated well on the national scene also; he ranked 7th in the NCAA in points/set, 15th in blocks/set, and 20th in kills/set.
