Borkovec Named Assistant Coach To Men and Women's Water Polo Programs

PRINCETON, N.J. – Cara Borkovec has been announced as the new assistant coach for the Princeton men and women's water polo teams.
"It's honor to join the water polo programs at Princeton University," said Borkovec. "I'm excited to get started and work with Derek and Dustin."
"We are thrilled to have Cara round out our staff here at Princeton," said Dustin Litvak, head coach of the men's squad. "She has worked with the top high school and club teams in the country and will be a tremendous asset to both the men's and women's teams. In addition to her playing and coaching stints in California, she also has ties to the Midwest which will help us recruit the best student-athletes from all over the country. Her knowledge and playing experience will benefit not only our players, but Derek and I as well."
"We are very excited to welcome Cara into the Princeton family," said Derek Ellingson, head coach of the women's unit. "Cara comes to Princeton with a ton of experience at the highest levels in both club and high school. She has proven her willingness to learn, demonstrated her ability to coach and will adapt well to the Princeton atmosphere. We are looking forward to the coming years and are extremely pleased to have her on staff."
Borkovec recently finished her playing career at UC-Irvine where she scored 22 goals and was second on the team in assists (21) and tied for second in steals (19) this season. One of her career highlights was scoring the game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime against top-seeded Hawaii in the 2018 Big West Championship game, giving the Anteaters its second straight conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance. She graduated from UC-Irvine with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Social Behavior.
She also scored 17 tallies for the Anteaters in 2017 before transferring from USC. As a freshman, Borkovec registered four goals for the Trojans, who placed third at the NCAA Tournament. As senior at Laguna Beach High School, the assistant coach was named OC Athlete of the Year and to the All-CIF team, helping her team win the 2014 CIF-SS Water Polo Division I title. She spent time with the Windy City and Set Water Polo Clubs as well.
Her coaching background features time as an assistant to the varsity squad and junior varsity head coach at Laguna Beach from 2014-18, highlighted by the women's team's 2018 Division-I crown this year. She also coached at SET Aquatics, helping the 16U A team to the Junior Olympics championship and the 16U B team to eighth place at the Junior Olympics this year.
